Foglight Question and poll

Well, it has finally happened to me.. I got back to my truck at the airport after being gone a few days and my foglights dont work. Yes they had finally gotten cracked (only have 8k miles) but they were about 1/3 filled with water.

So my question is "How does this happen?"

I dont get it? there wasnt any water in there before the trip and I parked on the third level and its covered.. how can this be?

anyway, the poll is.. how many of you werent able to get them fixed by the dealer under warranty?

Worst part is that I had replaced the stock bulbs with Silverstars and I am sure those are toast.. $50 bucks gone...

No problem getting mine warrantied so far... even have them order the lights and let me do the swap in the parking lot, just so I don't have to leave my truck at the mercy of their stall apes.

Hey Dana,

Were your replacement bulbs of a higher wattage than the original bulbs? The heat generated by the bulbs against the cold or wet lense surface is what causes the cracks. My local dealer has replaced mine under warranty with no questions asked. So far the replacements haven't cracked yet. Maybe they are the new improved version. Either way, before you take your truck back to the dealer for replacements, my advice is to put the original bulbs back in. It's one less thing for them pick out as being your fault.

My fog lights cracked sometime within the first month after purchase of the truck. I new i hadn't been on the road enough to be hit by rocks or debris. After a close look at the lenses i realized the cracks were on the inside. The only way for this to have happened is heat or cold. So i'm convinced that having the lights on then splashing cold water on them can crack them.
I had my lights completely replaced in Athens, TX at McGilvray Ford (SVT dealer) under warranty with no questions asked. Since that time I really haven't been overly cautious about water contacting the foglights, and use the lights all the time, yet still don't have any cracks. I don't know if they used a different kind of lens or what, but i think that in the future ford should use something that is going to stand up to the elements.

same thing happened to me, but @ 11,000 miles with Silverstars..

both fogs cracked, one filled 1/4 with water, and one busted Silverstar..

Be sure to remove your Silverstars, and replace with your stock bulbs before going to dealer, this way thay CANT put the blame on the Silverstars for cracking your fogs.

Same thing with mine, I think its from having the fogs on while its raining or something and the water hits the hot lense and cracks.

Dealers here in Jersey were giving me the run around about getting them replaced under warrenty.. until i called SVT!
Explained the entire situation about how dealer is saying they have no word of this problem etc, and SVT called the dealer direct for me to "enlighten" them!

Needless to say, the parts are on order, and they will NOW be replaced..

Tip from SVT, "If the lens are cracked, and the outside of the lens itself is smooth, then they were cracked by inside heat, and these lens would be a defect in product, and WILL BE replaced under Ford warrenty dept."

If you guys have a hard time with your dealer like i did, call SVT and have them call the dealer and fill those sh*t heads in on the problem.. >refering to Downs Ford, Toms River NJ<

Thumbs up

thanks for all the feedback.. I will change the bulbs but I dont think they are any hotter than stock but why take the chance the dealer will void the warranty.. if they give me grief about them, I will have then call SVT or I will call SVT to get it squared away..

Is there such a thing?

One things for sure these fog lights suck. You would think that they could make them out of Pyrex or something.

My friend just got his 2001 cracked fog lights replaced last week. The new fogs are redesigned and look different than the old ones. I wonder if they last longer?

It will never be a problem for me. Bye bye fogs, hello brake ducts.
