You guys gotta do a 2nd gear down shift at 60mph? Huh? Remind me NOT to ride with any of ya'll. Ever.

If you really do, then pull the shift lever down into second at no throttle. That way the trannys 2nd gear "band" will enguage. And the motor will be ready to pounce as soon as you stab it.
Far less stress/wear that way.

Driving at 60 mph, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to avoid this downshift to make a pass on a two-lane road...?

How do you guys "avoid" it?
lets be honest, basic driving and passing is not going to kill the truck

highway racing on a consistent basis (which i would never do ) is what will hurt the engine

I'ts like saying you shouldnt wrap your truck all the way out when you are racing.....it is more fun and productive. That isnt good for it but you dont hear anyone bitching about that. Sorry I just think it is crazy to worry about it. If I'm gonna worry about something like that then I'll just sell my L and go buy an escort or some other low performance vehicle.

-on a side note I guess since i dont have as many posts as you that I am not entitled to my opinion. My apologies sir. I shall do nothing but put "LOL" or "Great Job!!! Good Times!! " in any post from now on till I hit at least 1000. Then I will get my opinion entitlement back. <grin>

WOW...This thread scares me.. I think from now on i'm gonna pamper this puppy.. I want my truck to last longer being it's got 70K miles on her and (knock on wood) drives like new.. I have included a good bit of abuse in those milages as far as a nice number of WOT punches. No tranny problems yet or detonation lately...I'd rather take it slow and easy before I someday have to put my foot in my mouth...Pullies are cool but I don't really feel like i'd have peace of mind with one especially since my L is a daily driver..

Take care!

One would think that when you buy a $30,000.00 SVT PERFORMANCE VEHICLE you are allowed to get on the parkway the same way "I HAVE BEEN" for over 25 years. You come up the ramp, put the pedal through the floor board, and WAM, YOUR IN.
To make statements that if we do that it's the same as 999 runs at the track, is outright insane, and if Ford made them to blew up like this, then I say lets give them a few thousand trannys to rebuild. Thats how I feel about it, ""IF IT'S STILL STOCK"" I'm not

I do however understand WHY most tunners will tell you "NOT TO DO THAT" after it's been Modded. Due to the AGGRESIVE TUNES lots of us have, the HIGH BOOST added with AFTER MARKET PULLEYS, and A/F readings that have been MODIFIED. Major extra heat, and Boost will be instantly created as a result of a sudden 2 gear downshift at WOT. With the torque reduction turned off (like I have) and the Valve Body Kit most of you have, I'd say "it is" major EXTRA stress on the tranny.

Do I still do it, HELL YA, but not nearly as often as before. To tell you the truth once I got into the track again, AND I DID I save most of my WOT for the 1/4 so I can truly test and tune.

Did Ford skimp on reliability and strenth on these Motors and Tannys, YES THEY DID, so now we have to live with the aftermath.

I've heard its bad on tranny as well, makes sense. Anyways if your going 60 and u need to pass instantly Just put the throttle down to about 1/2 and downshift to 3rd, and keep it at 1/2 for a 1/2 sec and slowly keep downing the pedal. So you never put instant pressure on your system. 4-3 downshift is fine.

I cna pass anything if they're going 60-70 as well by this method in fast time, maybe its just from my new mods. but No need to pull a Lightning strike on ppl to pass :P

I am sorry i bought my truck to drive, not pamper. If i wanted to pamper it i'd buy a volvo or something.

Step 1:Buy it
Step 2: mod it
Step 3: race it
Step 4: forget about the details...have fun

If ya break it, make it better and repeat steps 1-4
