many people trade thier L for a H2
I'm sorry Lightning00n93Cobra and PhillipSVT. I would rather run the 1/4 in 12 seconds in a sweet looking well proportioned pimped out L than in 12 MINUTES in a giant refrigerator on wheels. just my .02
Why not one of each??? I've convinced the wife to let me order one in January without having to get rid of the L (probably helped that she just managed to finagle me into getting her a 911 Carrera though).
Yea, I can see many of you all have one track minds. Who cares about 1/4 mile times when you need a family vehicle that you can play in the mountains with. The last time I checked, the L isn't a great vehicle to pull behind a motorhome either. Haveing both would be the ultimate, but on the bright side, when they come out with the gen III's it will be that much funner.
The H2 isn't even close to being a HUMMER. Has anyone looked at the suspension components on those ugly a$$ things. It looks like if you took it off road that ***** would bend under the least amount of pressure. GM is good at ruining a good vehicle, ie. Impala SS, Hummer, Monte Carlo, Buick GS the list could go on. I'm getting sick just thinking about it. Are all the GM designers old men and soccer moms? What happened to all the good R&D(resurch and developement)?
back during the summer I was searching for a used Hummer (H1) because I think they kick a$$ even though they are affiliated with Chevy/GM. at $110,000 I certainly can't afford nor would I want to pay for a new one, but I found used H1s for as low as $30,000 dollars. right around this time they started doing press for the H2. At first I thought it was BS, like some have said, basically a wimpy chevy 4x4 that looks like a hummer, but at the same time I new it was an excellent idea, because for the average person, it is awesome. HALF the price of an H1, you can actually drive and park the thing reasonably easily (unlike H1), it has creature comforts and you can actually talk to your passengers without screaming (unlike H1). and you can even go over 80mph in one! (unlike H1) So I had mixed emotions about the whole idea, but the fact that it seems to be mostly a reworked chevy truck ruled out any chance of one finding it's way into my garage.
when these things hit the street I thought that they were stupid looking, tall and gangly and not even close to the H1. Recently a friend bought one and I had an opportunity to drive it. Bright yellow and big as chit! It was REALLY fun. I thouroughly (sp?) enjoyed it. I never got that much attention in my L. EVERYBODY was looking at this thing. and for those who don't think it's rugged enough, go test drive one. Really rugged or not? who knows, but it makes you feel like you are driving an M1 Abrahms tank. I hate chevy's, but that test drive had me smiling about this one.
I hated them at first too, but you should all reserve judgement until you drive one.
just my .02

It is no more or no less rugged than any other 4x4 1500 platform from chevy/gm.
I drove the h1 in the military and I assure you, they H2 will NOT take anywhere NEAR the abuse of an H1. I drove that h1 over a pile of chopped up telephone poles, up the side of a mountain approaching the angle of repose, through a water/mud pit deep enough that water was pouring into the cabin and then proceeded to drive through thick weeds and brush. Short of a tire failure or deep as hell mud, they are unstoppable.
Look under an H2. You will see the same exact thing underneath any chevy or gm truck. Why? Because it iIS one with a different shell.
If I was going to dump 50 large on a vehicle, it damn well woudln't be that poser of a hummer. I would look for a used, good shape late model H1 with the newer (larger) engine and alloy wheels.
You might as well get a king ranch 4x4, jack that baby to the moon and then put a built motor and tranny on it for grins.

I have rode in many H1s and also in chevy pick ups. Almost every day I see hummers that are taken offroad and come back with battlescares to show. I can't say the same for chevy trucks, but why do you think the military switched from Full size Blazer trucks and Jeeps to Hummvs. Sure the Army still has some but they are all pieces of junk. I wouldn't even take them in a dirt parking lot. I'm sure you'll get lots of looks in a H2, because those thing are ugly. I stare at them when I see one, only because I can't see spending that much money on one. If it is a true Hummer let it keep the name, but if it is not a real hummer give it a different name. Like the SOCCER MOM MOBILE!
I guess you all haven't looked at the H2 much. They are not just a truck with a differnt body. They have much more reinforcments. They have rocker pannel protection (if you know what that is) and when is the last time a chevy or GM truck had a 5 link coil spring rear suspencion??????????? The T-case is totally differnt. If someone wanted an off road vehicle they would skip the H1 and buy a sniper of assassin or bruiser and really go for it not just the little play toy's.
If ford owned Hummer, you all would be all over them (i saw that smile)

Phillip, you make some good points about the fact that it would make a good family hauler, and tow vehicle.
Here is my take on these new "Off road" type vehicles.
Firstly, I would not trade my "L" in on another vehicle, unless it was another pickup with more performance for the same price.
IE, if Chevy/Dodge, ect, happened to come out with a better looking, faster truck, that happened to run low 13's stock for around $33K.
(Then MAYBE)
As far as a family vehicle, I honestly would look at either a Harley, or a Super Crew, with a Diesel.
You get the functionality of four doors, the power to tow and go up hills, and the safety of a slightly lifted BIG vehicle.
As far as "Off Road"...
Like you mentioned...My take on off road vehicles is, it better be solid axle, with a real transfer case, able to be abused, beat up, broken, and cheap to repair.
I purchased a 92 Full size Bronco for this purpose a couple of years ago with this intent.
It now has a 4" lift, 33's, detroit rear, 4:56's, and a lot of other little things for this purpose...
I have since purchased a (Don't laugh) Suzuki Samurai, and am in the process of building it to replace the Bronco.
Mind you the Bronco works well, but to get any more aggresive with it, would mean major sheet metal damage.
The Sammi on the other hand...
Hmmm, I'll probably have a total of 4K in it including the cost of the vehicle when all is said and done, and it will go ANYWHERE I want it to.
Sorry so long, just my Humble Opinion on the difference I feel an off road vehicle should be, and what a family hauler should be.
I just could not see spending $50K on a vehicle that is MEANT to go off road, and EVER imagine doing it.

What a strange comparison. I had a look at the new Hummer website and found it strange that no diesel was offered in the new models. What kinda crap is that?? No diesel... that's what made the original H1 unstoppable. Loads of torque for hill climbing, reliability, excellent fuel economy compared to H2. Try crossing a stream in an H2 - good luck when you get wet ignition components - I hope it floats!
Ahh, what a joke.
Ahh, what a joke.
i just joined this site yesterday. didnt expect to here about a H2 here. i have a 1999 lightning and love it. and my family vehicle is a 2001 f250 crew cab powerstroke.. i would love to hook on to a H2 BUMPER and drag it around and still get 15-18 mpg. you can keep those ugly over priced things. by a ford!!! and save 15-20k
