Traction

What is the best tire for launching a 2002 HD truck? I know you L guys are laughing cuz the truck is heavy but there has to be some way to improve the 60 ft. times. Hairy burnouts with VHT are not the answer cuz the Goodyears are too expensive. Is there a slick that available that does not look too goofy? Any advice is welcome.

Just the tire for you

Description says it all....
The Super Swamper TSL with the patented TSL tread design offers unsurpassed traction under the toughest of conditions. Nine years of developing and testing produced the ultimate tire tread design. Short, intermediate and long massive lugs are uniquely arranged, each proportioned and spaced to bite quickly and to self-clean rapidly. The overall design gives today's on-and-off-road driver a tire that is both directionally and laterally stable; unmatched in performance. This is an extremely aggressive design that requires strict attention to air pressure when run on the highway.

I run Hoosier QTP 28x14.5x16.They are a little wide though. You might be interested in the 28x12.5x16 Hoosiers slicks. They fit under the fenderwell and I know people with 1.6 60 fts.
A 16 inch wheel will NOT require any grinding and fit very nicely.
Hope this helps.

I knew he must be looking for special application because traction has been covered here what 3-4,000 times ? So since he was looking for a solution that wasn't covered by using this

Vinnie,

After some consideration I ordered a pair of Weld 16x10 wheels and a pair of QTP 28x14.5x16. Have you had any problems with them rubbing? They were recommended to me by a friend who drives a stock eliminator car. What kind of 60's are you getting? And do you ever drive them on the street?

No problem with them rubbing. They do stick out a little though and when you do a bunout it gets on the sides(nothing a cotton towel can't rub off).
My 60 fts are in the 1.7s.Mostly low 1.70,1.71 range.
I keep them in the back of the truck at all times because I took the spare out,but I would not recommend driving them on the street. It is a very soft compound(31 on the durometer-stock is 60).
Also I did NOT screw them in and they did move at first(about an inch) but have settled in now and they do not move at all.
Here is a pic on the street

And at the track

I don't think any slick will look goofy as long as the wheel it is on matches the front wheels. I had 26x11.5x16 et streets on extreme alloy aluminum wheels and used it with spare tires from my truck and my fathers. I have 28x10x16 hoosiers on 16x8 american racing aluminum baja wheels and they don't look great either. I just solved that problem today with an order of 6 weld prostars. 2-18x9.5 with nitto 555R's, 2-18x8 with nitto 555's, 2-16x8 with hoosiers 28x10x16's. I hope they work okay and look good.

Vinnie,

Thanks for the info.. Does the lightning come from the factory with the same size wheels (20") as the 2002 Harley truck? Is the QTP Hoosier tire mounted on a 16" rim roughly the same overall hieght as the stock HD Goodyears? Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah traction may have been covered 4000 times on this forum and nolonger a concern, but dealing with smart***'s requires no forum. You just need to visit West Texas.

This question is a decent one.. While the stock rim size (18") and tire size 295/45/18 is well covered here, the level of detail in your question is specfic enough to be reasonable...

Vin,

Thanks for the reassurance, I had checked for clearance before I ordered them but its always nice to talk to someone running them. Maybe we can meet up at the track once I get em, and you can give me some pointers on how to launch em, since we are both in NJ. Thanks again
