Launching on Slicks
I recently started running with slicks and need some advice. The slicks are MT ET Street 26x11.50-16 on 16x10 rims. I went with the 26's because I still have the factory 3.55 gears in the 2000 L. Stock converter as well. Also, I installed Metco Trac Links and a driveshaft loop.
The questions are:
1) What RPM to launch from?
2)What PSI?
3)Burnout? How much Heat/Smoke is necessary? What gear?
Any and all replies are good!
Thanks,
Fred.

Iam still in the learning curve.........
But this is what I do:
Start at 15psi
pull out of the water and start your burnout in low gear (1)
hold the rpm's at 2500/3500, till the smoke starts to boil
pull to the line in drive and bring the rpm's to 2500 for a starting point, go on the last yellow
Yell, "Who's your daddy" as your going thru the traps

2500 RPMS with a stock converter might be a little hard though.

I couldnt have said it better !!!
G00d tip's Fast Gator.
I don't think I can stall over 2000.
I'll try 15-16 psi, long slow burnout, and stall as high as I can go. we will see what happens.
I think I nailed it down to the stall speed: I was leaving @ 1500 like I do when I run the F-1's. I mashed the gas instead of rolling into it but I didn't improve the short times that much.
I will launch as high as I can and we will see what develops.
Thank You.
Fred.

I think we may be going to Atco on Tuesday or Cecil on Wednesday. Keep an eye on DeValLO. Watch the weather. It is supposed to be a low in the mid 40's which means 50's for race time. If there is a strong west wind we will go to Ceicil on Wed. Otherwise it will be Atco on Tuesday.

The ET Streets like 17-18 psi, but try different pressures and see what works best. Don't go under 16 psi though, because with the short sidewall, I've seen the rim smack the ground with low pressure.
Most stock converter trucks produce the best 60ft by launching between 1000-1100 rpms, just enough to preload the driveline. Some people have had success with higher rpms, but again, you'll have to see what works for you.
As for the burnout, this is a CLASSIC mistake made by lots of people. Many people do their burnouts in low gears. This is NOT what you want to do. Leave the shifter in drive, and let the wheels spin up to 3rd gear, usually about 80mph or so. You want wheel speed for your burnout, not engine rpms. Spin the tires until you see tire smoke, then continue for about 5 seconds or so. The smoke indicates the tire is at the correct temperature, but overspinning it just wastes rubber.
Hope this helps.

Come to Atco on Tuesday. I'll explain it. Have a nice day.

Copied from the NLOC boards
From my experience, I would run about 18-20psi in the slicks to start. With a heavy vehicle you dont want to run too little psi as it will be a handful to drive at the top end of the track.
Your burnout should be like this.
Drive around the water.
back the slicks into the "pit" and as your pulling out of the water, spin the tires over. This will get the entire slick surface wet.
Pull forward until your slicks are at the edge of the wet area on the pavement.
Pull the tranny down into low and begin your burnout.
When you stabalize the power at 4500-5000rpm, shift into 2nd.
Continue the burnout for about 5 more seconds. You should see smoke flowing from the fenderwells, but you dont need to put on a smoke show.
This is IMPORTANT. DO NOT DO A DRY HOP! Pull straight to the line and stage.
Stall up to your max stall and let 'er fly!
I think thats pretty clear. How high can you stall up with the stock convertor? I could get 1900 out of mine. If it spins, drop 2 psi out of the slicks. I wouldnt go below 16psi on a truck. If you cannot get traction with a max stall launce, drop the RPM down 200RPM and try again.
Let us know how it works for you.
Chime in ... Let me know what you think...
Thanks,
Fred
