Achieving Near Lightning Results

Guys,
My goal with my next truck is to achieve near Lightning results with a Crew Cab pickup. Now I'm not expecting to outrun lightnings, but I would like my next truck to be FAST but have 4 doors. Here are my two options, both of which will be bought using X-plan:

1. Modify a Supercrew 4x2 by enhancing appearance and performance to be more Lightning like. Performance enhancements would include every possible bolt-on including a blower, custom tuning etc. Appearance may include a body kit and Lightning wheels.

2. Purchase a Harley Davidson Supercrew and do some bolt-ons to enhance performance including custom tuning etc. Although I like the looks of the HD, try not to consider that. I am mainly concerned with performance. One advantage of this truck is the more stout transmission available (4r100 vs. 4r70w). Disadvantage is obviously cost.

I would appreciate your opinions please. And to all the L owners...I would love to have an L but my wife just won't buy it..

Thanks
-Jay

Does ford put the S/C 5.4L SOHC motor in at Supercrew HD? If so, I would say go that rought... A six pound lower pulley along with a chip and filter from any of the Big 3, and your set.

The Screws are nice with the turbo diesil upgrades. Those things are awesome. Kind of pricey for me though. The Banks power pack can add some real ***** to those things.

Maybe I didn't clarify. The supercrew is an F150 with the 5.4 litre motor. The Harley Davidson uses the lightning drivetrain. Same motor, blower, and tranny. Just de-tuned and not as powerful as the lightning. Let me know what you think.

Sounds like you want a HD. By the time you add a blower and related items, wheels perhaps, ground effects, etc., the price for a Screw could be more than an HD. But that's just my $.02.

Jay:

Seems to me you would choose the HD 150 for the simple reason that you are almost there when you drive it off the lot. Blower, trannie and similar suspension mods.
Then about all your fighting is the weight and I don't remember the exact difference but my Blackwood is supposedly about 800-1000 lbs heavier than my 99 Lightning and is based on the same truck as the HD.
Paxton/Novi has a Blackwood they blew and it turns 14.74 with 23 inch wheels/tires. I would spend some time on the HD section of the forum and see what those guys are getting for times.
As for me, I am going to buy a bigger piggy bank and start saving for some sort of blower for my Wood. And, of course a stouter gearbox.
Let us know what you decide.
Bill

02 HD's weigh in roughly 600 lbs heavier than Lightnings do.

i'd say your best bet would be get a 02 HD.
reasons?:
1. prices lower cuz 03 about to come out
2. already have suspension/drivetrain/motor
3. Lightning parts bolt right up
4. LOOKS!!!
5. probably cost less in the long run and be more reliable.

The fastest HD on this board so far is cobrasvt1. His best run so far has been a 13.0 withouth traction devises or nos. I forget all his mods, but he's also running it at full weight (bedmat, spare, stereo, tailgate etc. all on the truck). With cooler weather he'll be in the 12's no doubt about it. And then with slicks, etc. watch out! LoL.

His truck is most likely gonna be on ESPN2 on october 2nd at 6 pm eastern time. They recorded him at the Atco event a few weeks ago when he was on the dyno (got 400+/500+ btw)

f150intally, I have been thinking about the same thing lately. I currently have a 02 L but will probably sell it later this year. My thoughts are to get a True Blue Supercrew 4x4(FX4), yes I said 4x4, and put a L motor(built?) with all the bolt-ons. I would love to see a 4x4 supercrew running 12's!!

You may be able to build the factory motor in the 4x4 to the specs of the Lightning motor for less money. It seems to be costly to drop the lightning drivetrain in. Unless you have some contacts.

definately go eith the HD. I have put in close to 5000 in my engine, It might be able to hang with a stock HD, but it is still more cost effective to go factry supercharged. and there is tons of aftermarket stuff ready to put on. if you really want to get a 4x4 it is possible to get it close to a stock L or HD but it would cost you alot more. it all depends on what you want to do. The HD would definately be more cost and time effective, but if you want to do it yourself you will have alot of fun too. I have had tons of fun working on my truck. but if i was going to buy a truck right now i would get the 02 HD. Plus resale will be much better on a factory supercharged truck. But if you decide to do it yourself, call crash and get an ATI, because there is no other way to go if you want to hang with an L.
