Lightning speakers
2 also in the bottom rear panels. 4 total in the whole truck. All 6x8's. Really the ones in the front door are the ones you should be concerned about replacing first. You won't hear much from the rears except mid-bass, so either leave them alone or replace them with speakers that are good for mid-bass.

Stock speakers SUCK
Doug
a lot of people get sub(s) when they upgrade their sound systems so they get rid of the rear speakers.
and in all honesty, even though i LOVE mobile audio/video...the stockers aren't bad for the space of the cab. unless you're wanting to feel the bass along with everyone in a 15 yard radius, the stockers are fine for everyday driving. although i'd rather have an in-dash cd player....
also, i heard they were 5x7s (although i know most 6x8s and 5x7s are "interchangeable" but was told that if you replace the stockers with aftermarket speakers, get something other than the stock head unit to power them. factory speakers are made so that they are responsive to minimal power but once you get aftermarket ones, the stock head unit won't be able to keep up....

OK its 5 in the morning bare with me. I say change the actual stereo first. It produces the sound, the speakers reproduce. I have $2700 dollars whole sale cost worth of stereo equipment in my truck. I have the stock speakers still in the front doors running for highs with replacement, I used to have 160 watts rms to each speaker, now only have 115 to each, but no one can tell, its all about the source of the sound, my actual deck has no built in power, its a very high quality head unit. People often ask what I am running in the doors, they question to believe me when i say stock. Bottom line change the source: Stereo... but if you chose not to, speakers will also help.

The stock speakers have a what, 1/3 oz magnet on them? The sound is sooo much cleaner with aftermarket speakers. But I must add that I took the factory speakers that I replaced in my truck and put them in my 75 LTD along with the factory head unit and changer that I got from Capt O. So what Iam saying is I have a 2001 Lightning stereo in my LTD and it sounds great
I'm sorry I wasnt clearer before. The Speakers in my 2000 Lightning were less than adequate. My goal was to be able to drive down the freeway on a spring or fall morning with the windows down at full throttle and still hear the music. The unamplified stock head unit didnt have the guts to do the job. I now have the stock head unit with Boston acoustic components and a JL 10" sub and an Alpine 5 channel amp. To me it sounds great .... The amp would have melted the stick speakers because the ones in my truck sucked ...
They may have changed the speakers in 2001 or 2002 but for a very long time it was understood that the speakers were the weakest link.

Your right about having the windows open Doug. I couldn't enjoy it either at highway speed with the stock speakers. For now the Sub and extra 100 Watts right at you leg helps alot. The Clarion unfortunatly screws up WEAK FM stations with lots of static though. "We all found that out AFTER we bought them" But I get my two favorite stations and listen mostly to CD's, so it's working out well for me.
