torq converter installation help
This weekend is the time we will be installing the new FT torq converter in the L. I've got a friend comming in town to help out and need to know if there are any special tools we may need. Also any tips would be apreciated. Have yet to drop an L tranny yet and need to know what to take off thats holding it up there.

i'm in the process of getting my tranny rebuilt as we speak. i really wish i would have taking it to my friends shop (he has a lift) to pull that pig of a transmission 200 plus lbs. but what i did is jacked up the front end put a stack of 6 2x8 boards (nailed together like a ramp) chocked the rear wheels as the trans is in neutral per the manual i'm am referencing and if you have long tubes plan on pulling them off cause they are in the way if you have stock manifolds then just drop the cats back. other than than that plan on having a good floor jack and a good portion of the day to do this
be safe and have fun

Jason,
I haven't pulled the L trans before, but on other trans, I usually put the front wheels on jack stands and jack the back up so it is level and put jack stands underneath. That usually gives me enough room to move around. If you don't have a trans jack, I made this thing out of wood that fits in a regular floor jack. You can borrow it if you need. You probably won't be pulling the trans out from under the truck, but if you are considering it, be sure that the truck is high enough to get it out.
Most important, be sure the torque converter is seated properly on the output shaft or you can damage the pump. I usually get it seated and then stick a piece of wood over it and duct tape that so it doesn't move until it is close to the motor.
Hope it helps....

I had my first one professionally installed for $150. I was being cheap, so I did the install on my second one...MAJOR MISTAKE!!! I did it myself in a day, but it was ALOT of work...I'll never do it again. It's worth the $150 to pay someone to do it.
Thats just it though,,, I've got a mechanic to do it, he's never done one with an L before. There may be a problem with finding a lift to get the work done though. Any other tips here are apreciated, or if anyone knows a good shop in the area, I've been considering all things.
