im running the same amp as snoopy.. sounds great... although it doesnt compare to the hps-1000 infinity at home

i had a v12 alpine monoblock hooked up to it before.. it didnt have enough power.. the thunderforms LOVE power.. and the JL amps are excellent.. the difference in the highs alone are worth the extra money (had a 4ch v12 alpine, went to JL 300x4)

Hey guys help a 30's something out her please.

When you say they "love" the power. What do you mean? Is it requiring a larger amp? Do you have to upgrade the alt/batt?

Sorry for the ignorance in the subject, but I'm gonna be doing something like this for the first time at about the first of the year.

And while i'm spilling the ignorance How decent of a system could I do/get with using the stock head unit/CD changer but replacing the stock speakers and adding some subs/amp only spending about $750?

Or would my money be better spent in another way to improve it. (classic rock / modern country)

Thanks, WOT

I am using the stock head unit with Boston speakers in doors and rear and a single JL sub all running off Alpine 5 channel amp.. I had it professionally installed and it cost more than $750 but it sounds GOOD...

If you did the work yourself and left the back speakers out and got a cheaper amp or amps you could get it near the $750...

Question

Thanks silver_2000,

how much $$ in parts only to get the stuff you have?

I could go more $ but i'm wanting to cut 12s come march/april

How much better would it be if I just replaced all 4 stock speakers at first then later on in the year went with the full deal?

Again thanks, WOT

I have a pair of the 10" SVC versions and they have like the most mounting depth of any sub I've used. I searched around and it came down to that they would barely fit if they fit at all. So I decided against getting the thunderforms, meanwhile the subs go unused in my garage.

If they fit, o joyous day, I can finally put them in.

captain -

I dremeled the holes out to make the baskets fit. The depth was ok, they didn't seem to come close to the back side.

MASVT -

Try to pick a sub that requires a little less enclosure space. They're decent in space, but a little less than some subs need.

If you can wing 900 bucks, I got the thunderforms loaded (easy) a 5 channel amp, infinity components in front and 6x8's rear. Took some custom intall work but definitely worth it. Stock head unit is fine (just make sure your amp can accept speaker level inputs). Sounds great and worth every penny. To save money, leave the rear speakers out of the equation, get a 4 channel amp, run the components with 1 channel each, bridge the other two to run the thunderform and enjoy. That should easily get you under 750 bucks. The keys are good shopping to find the best deals and definetely get components for the front.

Gator- heheheh! I hear ya!

Still, when you are stuck in the middle of a typical Chicagoland 5 mile traffic jamb, you can't do "squealing rubber and blower whine" without inflicting major damage. This is why I blew a couple grand on a sound system. Its cheaper than bail. Consider it "therapy" for those of us without wide open spaces.

How is the quality of the thunderforms? How does it sound? The setup I have now sounds awesome but the box blocks the center console from going down and is kind of ugly behing the seats. Im thinking about goin with the thunderform and putting my JL 10W3s in them but I dont want to sacrafice quality.

IMO: (MTX Tform w/ MTX woofers) the sound is good, and if properly mounted can provide some really nice bass *IF* you have the proper power to drive it. The MTX T6000 woofers are power hungry. I think they really need at LEAST 75W _RMS_ in order to do them justice. Don't think of running one off the stock system or a RadioShack/PepBoys/KMart amp. You need power; and there is "no replacement for displacement". Even the favorite replacement drivers (JL, Pioneer, Infiniti) need decent power. You need a quality amp to push and control a pair of woofers at decent levels. I love JL amps. Others have good experiences with other quality amps. You need to spend money on ANY amp to accurately control a woofer at decent levels.

I have four Boston Acoustic coaxials running off a JL 300/4 amp (75W RMS x 4) and the subs off a JL 250/1 (RMS) amp. It sounds great, but I've heard better. Its all a matter of how much $$$ you want to spend. I would not recommend running the TForms with any drivers with less than 100W RMS (mono). At less than that you'd get better bass response from stock speakers and a better amp.
