Can someone explain what detonation sounds like, I might hear it.

My friend just put in a 6 lb pulley and I'm getting ready to this week. When we are riding in his truck I hear something "rattling" almost like an exauhst guard, but I know what that sounds like and it's not that. It only happens when he's WOT and boost is up.

Anyone???

Ok. I'll do some research... but.

Has anyone had experience with L's and detonation where it sounds like a loose exaust guard? This is what it is almost sounding like. I've heard 'hard' detonation before on a non supercharged engine before. My friend (ie the driver) could not hear the noise, and it was easier to hear in the passenger seat. Since this would appear to be a unique situation, I wanted to pose it anyone who has had this happen or not, hopefully.

Thanks in advance.

What I heard sounded like someone was in the engine bay rattling a heavy chain

If you think you have slight detonation one way to test it is to buy decent octane boost or if you have 1/8 tank or less gas buy a gallon of 104 unleaded race fuel.. If the sound goes away it was detonation...

When I was having power loss problems before I was hearing a pinging sound in between WOT shifts..Sounded like some metals inside the motor were grinding against each other..Kinda like the shuffling of cards you mentioned..My truck was running really rough and shifts were way too firmer than normal and kept getting worse. When I took the chip out and reset the Comp, now everything is fine and I can't hear that sound anymore..The only noise I hear at WOT in between shifts now is that exhaust fart sound which is good!! I never figured out how the problem was fixed but i figured it was a really bad air/fuel mixture .. Trucks been running fine for a good 2 weeks now in stock form

Unhappy

You need to tell us more about your friend's truck. All we know are it has a newly installed 6 lb pulley............what year L, how many miles on it, other mods(certainly a chip?), OEM plugs? But, it could be the pulley install.....?

Way too many variables to help you but it certainly could be detonation. Tell him to 'stay out of it' until you determine and fix whatever it is.

detonation is similar to the sound Hannibel Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) made in Silence of the Lambs after uttering "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice cianti"...

FFuuu...FFuuu...FFuuu...FFuuu...FFuuu...FFuuu...

or something.

I know when I installed my pulley, I heard a rattling type sound. Wasnt exactly happy. I got out the torque wrench, and re-torqued the pulley. Turns out, I didn't fully torque down one of the nuts, and it was rattling. You may want to check the pulley again.

Good ideas. He has an '01 with boost bypass and a chip. He was told by his tuner (one I don't know) that the chip he used for stock will work fine w/ a 6# pulley. I'm wondering if it's the chip needing to be reburnt.
I'm going to recomend that he empty the tank and fill up with an extremely high octane. At least a gallon to check it out. He said he planned to call on his chip to find out.... Hopefully that's the problem...

Especially since my 6#er was shipped today and I am going to be installing everything that I have on wed/thurs.

If he's running a 6lb pulley w/ no chip he is hearing pinging. I would remove the pulley or get a chip ASAP. Also, change the plugs anyway....cheap insurance. I would buy Denso's.
