Is it still really a Lightning?
If you want to build something great, like a vehicle, it makes sence that you would start with something good.
If you started with a base model F150 you would have so much further to go to reach a point of satisfaction (?). If you start with a stock Lightning, there are already many componants in place. The SVT's are great (even the econo SVT) but that doesnt mean that there isn't room for improvemant.
We are in an era of total custom rides. Poeple have money to burn (not me, but others must!) so they start with a great truck (yes, I'm referring to the Lightning. To me it's still a truck) and make it better, and to suite them.
I someone has the cash why would they start at the bottom? Why not buy in near the top, it's so much easier!

this has been discussed before, and it was agreed that when either 51% of the parts or 51% of the weight of the truck, had been replaced with aftermarket parts, that "that" particular truck would be given the "Lightening" designation. badges would be allowed to remain with the former spelling, but the owners would be required to pronounce the modified version as "Light-ten-ning", when asked, "What in the hell kindda truck isdat?" i have seen a few "newbie" post, on this and other lists, claiming to have beaten a "Lightening". some of you have probably chuckled at posts like this, thinking the dumbass can't spell, while i am rolling around on the floor thinking, Lightening???, i'll bet you can't even beat a Lightning!!!
i guess you had to be there, or something

I didn't buy this truck thinking I would ever have gone this far with it. But I started to mod it and then it was all over!!
but no matter what anyone says I drive a lightning, "lightning custom".

I have to agree with RTKILLA on this one.
I bought my lightning because it is the best performance truck on the planet, at least to me. Then I started doing mods and once you get past a certain point there is no turning back, so you might as well keep going forward and make what you think would be the perfect Lightning.
TampaSVT, RobG, TZrider, RTKILLA, SAL, Johnny, JDM"S 01, the list goes on and on, some of the best lightnings on the planet. And the list doesn't stop there, there is a huge amount of awesome lightning's on this and other boards. Great job guys keep the mods comming.
Once you start modding, whatch out.....

Guapo...I understand what you're saying. I think that most of us bought our Ls because of what they are...the baddest production truck made. Most of us only make minor mods, no more than a Mustang, Miata, or Corvette owner would make. However, there is a level of enthusiast (strongly represented in the L forum) that is not satisfied with having a vehicle like everyone else's, either in appearance or performance. They continuously "perfect" their vehicle, in order to have the best L out there.
Then there is a category of L owner that I kind of agree with you about...They buy the L with the intention of rebuilding the engine, tranny, rear end; putting in a roll cage, stripping out any extra weight, etc. They could save a few bucks iniially by buying a stripped down 6 cyl, and building it up from there. However, most of the people who are in a position to do this also use the vehicle as a medium for testing and building parts to sell other L owners. What better way than to start with an L? This adds credibility to their efforts, even if the end result is far removed from a real L. Would you buy mods from a tuner that didn't even own a L?
I guess I've said all this to say the same thing as the other guys have said...Everyone want's a L, and a modded one is even better. The hell with the economics....

For those who actually comprehended and understood what I said.... congratulations, and thank you. For the others... go back and read it, please, before bashing me in other posts. I bought a Lightning... I know what it is. My post was about taking a LIGHTNING, and turning it into something else with a new engine, new blower, etc...
I said nothing about making a "fake lightning".
You obviously know how to write, but, please learn how to read before you bash me.

I was just kidding on my post..I always try to throw a little laugh in on alot of seriousness..
I think Robert Duvall said it best in Days of Thunder
"there aint nothing Stock about a Stock car"
That says it all..Nascar has Ford Chevy Dodge and Pontiac..
And the Manufactures claim victory on Sunday..But the thing is
there aint nothing you can get in your Taurus that came from the track ..Short of the Emblem and the block..
I know what your saying..Its a good question to ask..
But I guess its all in the eye of the beholder..
And tomorrow..Its more deep thoughts by DEI Handy..
