If I have the Ford 4X4 transmission pan; what are the total quarts of transmission fluid needed if you can drain the whole system to include the torque converter?
What is the best way to drain the torque converter?
I have access to the flush system used at the local FOrd dealership service department. Does the flush system used by service department drain the torque converter? I think these machines replace a 1 for 1 based on adding up to 30 quarts their max. capacity and did not know if it drained the torque converter. If it doesn't what is the easiet way to drain the torque converter? Looking for answer from some of seasoned veterans on this.
Thanks,
Ron

Your question was brought up earlier too
Read above!
Here's my response w/in that thread:
...OH, and so you will know, the exchange machines DO exchange out all the fluid, even from the torque converter.

The tranny holds 17 [dry]. I'm not sure if you did get all the old fluid out or not, but if so you'll need close to this.
BTW, what did you put in it? Brand and type? How many miles on your beast and what year? Did you change the filter?
Notice the nice metal buildup on your magnet in the bottom of the pan? heheh I've seen them over an inch tall before, LoL!
I just had Royal Purple ATF (www.royalpurple.com) put in mine. I had it exchanged out using the T-Tech machine at Super Lube. I knew the manager so he gave me a good deal, and it only took about 20 minutes total, plus I got to do it myself, heheh. I pushed through a full 5 gallon pail (approx. 20 quarts), just so I'd make sure it exchanged it completely.
Anyways, I never say this because this never normally is true, and I don't believe in SOTP meters much, but I did notice my transmission shifted smoother. It's weird, and some of you will scoff at that, but it does
And I only have 1800 miles on my '02

read the other thread on this page, but it takes about 15.5 quarts if you have a 4x4 pan and you drain your converter.
you do not need to "pump your converter out" your 4R100 tranny has a torque converter drain plug 11mm socket will remove it.
you can use a tranny flush machine, they work fine, but they don't change the filter, so unless you change it afterwards (which defeats the purpose of the machine) then you are stuck with the same old filter. and don't believe that they "back flush" the filter like some advertise, most of them run off of the tranny's own fluid pump, and it doesn't have a reverse speed.

BfB and superfords,
Thanks for the info. I have 43K miles on the truck. At 22K I installed the 4x4 pan, filter and factory tech valve body.
Ready to try the Royal Purple and wanted to make sure I had the right amount.
Now the stupid question... how do I access the torque converter darin plug? I did not pay attention when I istalled the valve body and dense when it comes to automatics.
Thanks,
Ron

you'll see a small (approx 2"?) rubber plug, pull it out. if you are lucky you'll see a small 11mm drain plug sticking out of your converter, if you are not lucky, proceed to the next step

put a ratchet and socket (or 14mm allen head bit) depending on your lower pulley on the front of you crank/lower pulley and turn the motor over slowly (may need a friend to help, or could also try having friend bump starter over w/ ignition key but this could take a while and may never stop in exactly the right spot). anyway, turn the motor over untill you see the drain plug on the torque converter line up with the hole in the bellhousing, then simply remove the plug and allow to drain. it takes a few minutes to drain the converter, reinstall plug and cover and refill tranny 15.5 qts w 4x4 pan and new filter.
hope this helps,

I'm installing a Monster Box this morning and I bought 12 quarts. Mobil 1 at $5.99 a quart! So by the time its full thats about 100 bucks! Only the best will do!

Converters built after 8/11/2001 do not have a drain plug. To see what date your transmission was built, look on the ID tag for the line that begins BD (for build date), first digit is year, second letter is Month, a for Jan, b for Feb etc.., last two digits are day of month.
Hope this helps,
G
