S/C Snout bearing questions ....
On my way home from work yesterday i get off the freeway and drive down a residential street. I hear this whistling/grinding noise echoing of the parked cars on the street. I get home, pop the hood and do the manual throttle thing. The noise is comeing from the s/c, i drive down to the dealer, the service manager puts the stethoscope on it. He tells me to give him a call today, if its a bad bearing in the snout, will they just replace the snout ? or will they replace the whole s/c ?. This is the first thing to go wrong on my truck , it's a 2001 with 20,000 mi.
Hello-
Assuming you don't have an upper pulley, you can probably rule out the snout as the cause of your troubles. If you do, and the bearing was pressed on incorrectly, It might have caused internal wear.
However, once your supercharger is removed, you will probably notice significant scoring on the edges of the blades and major paint chipping (the blades are coated much like the outside of the charger, except smooth). The obvious effect would be a reduction in boost and, higher charge temps resulting from the blades "grinding" together....the noise you hear.
I have 3000 miles on my '01 with a 1 lb upper and 4lb lower. Took apart the engine to rebuild and noticed this problem. I had been hearing a noise...but didn't pinpoint the charger.
I brought the unit to the dealer and they replaced under warranty!!

Sometimes the noise you hear is related to the rollers that guide the belts. I've heard a repack of them makes a world of difference.
Basically, the blower is noisy. I can't remember over the course of three years that someone said, "Hey, mine doesn't make that noise".
But, that's just what I think....
the snout bearings do go bad and its possible thats whats wrong with it.
Best bet is to call up magnuson and get a new snout and replace it.
But check this first, take you blower belt off and see if its still making that noise, if it does then its not your blower.

Will they (Ford) replace just the snout or will they replace the S/C ?. If they replace just the snout and it still makes the noise, then i have to fight with them to replace the S/C. WHAT A PAIN !!! This is the only thing that has gone wrong with the truck, so i guess its not all that bad.
Just got a call from the sevice manager at the ford dealer, they ordered me a BRAND NEW S/C. I just hope they don't send me a HD S/C and not a SVT S/C.
I guess it pays to be buddys with the service manager of your local Ford dealer. He also told me something interesting, he said SVT didn't want his techs to even mess with with the snout. They told him to replace the whole unit.
