Gain a full tenth second ...

An older gentlemen at the strip told me
that tuning the plugs would gain a full tenth of
a second in the 1/4. When I asked what he
meant he told me that aligning the plugs with
the intact valve helped detonation.

He said mark valve location in head, then mark
plug location opposite the ground -- align with
shimmed washers of various thickness.

Anyone believe this? Or have you tried it?

JDM worked on your truck. I'm sure they know all the secrets and have been applied to your ride.

i've used champion racing plugs. instead of trying to index the plugs to expose the spark, the racing plugs have a side ground that exposes the entire electrode to the mixture, and none are hiding behind the ground, or something

The big problem with this advice is that the 5.4 head only has about 4 threads holding the plug in the head. So, by shimming it you would lose more thread surface and you would be VERY suceptible to blowing plugs out of the head.
In other words, try this at your own risk.

Ha, I beat all you f#@&*r's

It's called Indexing and, yes, it does work to some degree in *some* vehicles. A benefit on our trucks? I doubt.

Not to mention the dangers of doing this w/ reduced thread depth, especially on these motors.

Yep, that's an old trick called indexing the plugs. Its probably worth more on a naturally aspirated car but its one of those things to try if you have time, hehe....won't hurt anything.

Actually you won't loose any thread engagement because the plug protrudes through the head. Look at an old plug you have removed to see where the actual engagement area is. The hard part on doing this to an L is the electrode sits in a little pocket in the head. Also it sits so deep in the head I am not sure how you could see you index marks. Could do it with the heads off.
