Spark plug gap
I just bought the NGK spark plugs and they say to gap them at .044 is this where most L owners are gapping them at.Is anybody gapping them around .038 I know a few are and is working just fine! They claim this is a better gap for our L's.

Mine is set at 45 and running good.
NGK says between 42-46. I had a pro tell me that the wider the spark the better IF the vehicle has enough spark to bridge that gap which ours does.
But I would also like to hear from those who are banging out the fast 1/4 times.

absolutely correct, wider is better. The more spark exposed to incoming charge the better, all shortening up the gap will accomplish is to shorten the plug life.
If one wants to get really **** retentive, indexing the plugs can provide minute gains.
as it assures unimpeded exposure of the spark to the intake charge.

I belive Johnny L. and Spiro are both running there gaps below what NGK says. They are definitely two of the fastest L,s out there!I believe they have theirs set between
.035 to .038.

Let us know how they work out.
I took mine out because of mis-fire only to find out that the coil on one plug was very lose.

Hi Jim,
Indexing a plug is simply insuring that the gap of the plug is facing the intake valve instead of having the back of the electrode facing the incoming charge.
It can be a tedious process, involving the threading of the plug so that when torqued it winds up where you want it.
Some racers swear by it, some think it is to much trouble. Use to always attempt it on my Harley. (only 2 plugs to deal with).
In other words if this is the port _
You want the plug like this _J as opposed to J_ that.

Ah yes, thanks pvteye.
My pro-plug-installer told me abot this but I did not know the name.
Many thanks

Considering the fact that you can't start any of these plugs by hand and you must use a socket and an extension, I think indexing would be pretty difficult if not impossible.
Also, plugs only start in the threads one way. What you have to do is install a plug after you have marked it and see where the electrode ends up when it is tightened down. If it points the wrong way (away from the intake valve or injector) you remove the plug and try another one until you find one that points in the right direction when tight. You may do this half a dozen times on each plug to get it right and you may need a whole lot of plugs (10-15) in order to get them all right. On an L, forget it.

I gapped my NGK TR-6's at .035. They are working just fine. NGK's are supposed to be pre-gapped. I had to tighten them up just a hair but they where pretty close. The only problem with opening up the gap is if your mixture gets a little rich the plug is easier to fowl. Maybe with a hotter ignition it will be OK. (ie MSD)
To index your plug they make tapered spacer rings. .025 .035 .045 thick by shimming the plug out in a threaded hole will also turn the electrode about 90 degrees per .010 of shim. It is possible to index your plugs but would be very difficult on the back two cylinders. I've always indexed my snowmobile plugs exact but that's a two stroke motor and is alot fussier and easier to fowl plugs.

Speaking of coils. Two weeks ago Ford replaced one of my coils (#4) when I had a slight miss. Miss came back. Today they replaced the other 7 with the service comment,"NGS Diag found all coils except #4 breaking down". Service tech implied this was not an unusual problem. 12,500 miles.
