Don't use Greased Lightning after it clouded my Weld rims (brand new) on my GT. Sprayed on, washed off, then spent 6 hours or so polishing with Eagle One mag polish to get rid of most of the cloudiness (not all, still could see it).

That crap is way too caustic imho.

Any mag wheel polish and 10 minutes with a rag will polish the tips just fine. I like Eagle One myself.

MAAS

I have had really good luck with MAAS. It cleaned the stainless tips inside and out. I used mothers before, and this stuff seems to work better.

It does leave behind a protective coating of some sorts, or it seems to. When it gets wet, it beads up like it has wax on it.

I'll look at the stuff you are talking about, I got my "test" AL and stainless parts that I always try first. These are just scrap parts that I polished to a shine, then I always try a new cleaner / polisher on them first, so I don't have the problem mentioned in the above post ( been there done that myself ).
Just about any material supply place or hardware store has the AL, the stainless I got at an Industrial ACE supply store.

MAAS you can get at Wally world, wallgreens, Osco, and just about any other drug store, carries the small tubes.
I mail ordered a 1# can of the stuff I like it so much.

Ok...DEIMATT...

I went out today and bought the Greased Lightning and was not impressed. It didn't seem to do anything to the rusted black interior of my fat exhaust tips. Maybe I got the WRONG Greased Lightning??? Is yours slimy like mine???

Anyways, I sprayed it inside the exhaust tips and let it sit for 2 minutes...then scrubbed it will towel and rinsed with water. Didn't seem to do too much. Am I doing anything wrong?

I believe I might be using the WRONG Greased Lightning. It came in a Purple bottle. Check out this website (Click Here ) and tell me if this is the one you have. I DON'T HAVE THIS ONE.

DEIMATT...I figured things out!

Ok...The purple bottle I have is the HIGH PERFORMANCE version of the bottle you have. I purchased the "HIGH PERFORMANCE/ AUTOMOTIVE Greased Lightning" (Purple bottle) at Discount auto parts. I used it and was not impressed. Then I went to Publix(Supermarket) and bought the "Household Greased Lightning" (White Bottle) --- I then figured out they were both produced by the same company (A&M) in the same location.

In conclusion, "Greased Lightning" is a good product for those with black tips and black tips ONLY. I have rust and BLACK BUILD-UP on the inside that won't come off so I will be fixing that with some sanding and painting (ANTI-RUST) on the insides...they should look better than new.

ricekicker, it didn't work because their tips are stainless steel. Ours are chromed on the HD, and will rust on the inside. Their's won't. Just sand down the rust on the inside of the tips and paint it with gloss silver rustoleum. Looks like factory new when you do this, and then the soot just wipes right out, and it holds up great and won't rust like it did unprotected. I suggest you stay in the HD forum if you're looking for tips to clean HD parts that are different that the L. LoL, just messin with ya . but that's why it didn't work, different matals.

I also heard cerama-brite works great on the L tips.

Talking

The first thing i did when i got my L (back in Feb 01) was to put BaBolt's s/s tips on. I just spray a little Eagle one wheel cleaner on them and boom ! nice & shiney. Also back in Feb 01 the price of BaBolt's s/s tips were cheaper then they are now.

Heck, for what BaBolt's tips cost, you could hire Brooke Burke to come over monthly and wipe them down for you.

Harley356,

Thanks for your noble advice. I needed it. I thought something was wrong with me for a second. I went to a Ace hardware which I located online and they didn't have the rustoleum I was looking for (This store was garbage). They didn't have anything! Harley, which type of Rustoleum did you use (I understand they make different types of rustoleum paint) Also, I have been told to use a fine steel wool instead of the sand paper you recommended...what do you think? I greatly appreciate your advice and I will try your trick as soon as I can get things together.

Ok...I am going back to the HD forum now

The best way to use mothers for awesome results is this.

Wash the truck of course, including the tips. I use Purple Power on the outside and inside of the tips. I use a toothbrush to break up the crap inside.

Rinse the truck down, including the tips.

Wipe the truck dry.

I then take a small rag. I dip it in mothers and SCRUB the tips until my towel is blacker then the night sky. I do it again. Then the same to the inside.

I do each tip like this. Then when both tips are completely dry, i buff them off. The tips apprear to be Ceramic Coated over the stainless judging by the texture and color. Reminded a lot of my headers i had on the mustang.

At any rate, they will look absolutely beautiful if you keep up on them. I do this once a week. Ill take some pics when i do it tomorrow.
