Can I use a mechanical fuel pressure gauge?

I didn't think there would be a problem, until I read this on a previous post (from Speeding Bob):

Other mechanical gauges could be used but there could be some safety implications (ie: having a mechanical fuel pressure gauge, crashing, and becoming a crispy critter). A mechanical oil pressure gauge could be accomplished also but I'd want to have braided stainless steel lines.

Do we HAVE TO get the electric ones......From what I see in the searches of previous threads, most of you are using the Autometer 5763 Phantom Electric gauge, or Autometer 4363 Ultralite..............If I have to spend that much on a fuel pressure gauge, I'm thinking of just going with an A/F Ratio gauge.

Please help/advise.

thx,
JC

You can only use a mechanical FP gauge if it is mounted outside your truck. I think Spiro had one on his wiper cowl.

You CAN use a mecchanical gauge INSIDE, but you MUST use an ISOLATOR with it, along w/ stainless braided line. One line from the fuel rail to isolator filled w/ gasoline. Another line from isolator to gauge filled w/ anti-freeze. Mount isolator under hood somewhere, NOT inside cab!!

I used to use it on my Sy and it worked out great,, until the isolator went bad. Now I run electric inside and a mech. under the hood.

You didn't list the Autometer 5764. It is what I have but it is electric. By the time you mess around with the isolater and braided lines you might as well just get the electric gauge.

I think the gauge on the wiper cowl looks good, but the cops don't. hey equate stuff like that with speed demons.

I've used the isolator setups for years, and lemme tell you, they SUCK. You can run fuel into the cab if you like, but I strongly suggest against it for your own safety. Also, tracks won't allow that either, it's not legal to have fuel passing through the firewall.

Since the Autometer electric with the module came out, it's all I used now. It's pricey, but it's very accurate and safe. Plus for a few bucks more, they have a playback version that will show highest and lowest readings.
