Question Is steering shaft supposed to be so lose ?

I wrote a thread not to long ago about a noise up front on drivers side.So to day i looked around i felt the steering shaft it seemed it had a lot play by hand so called a friend he checked it out.He told me it seems it has to much play ,we checked his 98 firebird ram air .There was very little play.I know these are two different car companys ,but do you Lightning owners have the same play in your steering shafts. Also looked at the steering setup really good .I found at the bottom of steering shaft where it goes into steering gear box their is a plastic cover .I guess it protects the gear box i have found it is broken and moving around someone must have tightend the screw to much and cracked the plastic. My steering seems fine when driving but the noise up front i think is the cause of this its a rattling sound.Did anyone out their have the same problem and if so what was the cause of this ?and is the steering shaft supposed to be this lose. THANKS JIMMY
