Question Mystery Hose

I found a little 1/4 inch rubber hose dangling down from the rear of my truck, dragging on the ground. Upon closer inspection, the other end of the hose was connected to my axle, to a fitting protruding upwards and mounted outboard of the differential.

I fished around and found a plastic nipple hanging down from one of the frame cross-members which seemed to be just the right spot for the other end of the hose, so I hooked it back up.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, for $25,000, the question:

<drum roll>

What's the little hose for?
