'03 Cobra Crank Pulley
'03 Cobra Crank Pulley
...it's crank pulley runs ALL the accessories. Some of you may have known this, but I bet most didn't. I noticed it yesterday looking at the two Treadwell Ford has here in Mobile.
Supposedly Evan Smith w/ MM&FF swapped it out to a Lightning lower pulley (I believe a JL 6#'er). One thing to keep in mind here is the fact that not only can you speed the supercharger up, but you're also slowing down the other accessories in the mean time, which in turn will free up more hp as well.
Keep in mind the 4.6's and 5.4's on our cars/trucks are internally balanced, so the old rumor of having to have a pulley designed w/ a harmonic balancer built in is not true. I still think we could gain about 15 hp if we had someone design us some accessorie pulleys.
The only problem is when is too big too much for the alternator and water pump, as well as proper operation of the power steering pump.
This could get very interesting.

it's extremely close quarters down there too. we have a lot more room for larger pulleys than the cobra owners do. i wonder if Ford will follow this idea with the 04 3v "L". by having the blower on the accessory belt, it makes modding a lot more difficult
The picture of the engine I saw showed two pulleys. I believe the SC belt also runs the alternator. A larger lower pulley to turn the SC would also speed up the alternator.
A stock Lightning upper pulley (293) is supposed to add 3# of boost to the Cobra.
I don't know if the interchangeable upper pulley will fit or not; but, a 280 pulley should add 5-6# if that's true.

PS the underdrive pulleys in most cases are not very street friendly, on a race car sure, but as a daily driver, i personally wouldn't sacrifice water pump speed, or with my stereo the alt output...
But
if you had the larger crank pulley to speed up the s/c, putting underdrive pullies would bring the rpms back to or close to normal, rather than over speeding. The accessories wouldn't be underdriven at all, just slowed to close to oem specs. Right?

If you look closely you can see the second belt behind the front one. Behind the crank pulley assembly.

Very right indeed.
The way he said it was that putting a larger pulley on crank would SLOW DOWN the accesoires which is untrue.
i am betting most cobra owners will chose an upper pulley though(even though they are a pain to put on and can cause damage to the blower) Of course within reason speeding up the accessories probably will not effect hp that much. if we had the diameteres of the pulleys we could figure out how much faster we are talking. the larger pulleys are obviously not going to speed up as much as the smaller blower pulley though...(so A/C will not necessarily necessitate one, plus the ac cuts out at WOT where the higher rpms are reached anyways...) but lookin at that motor...Looks like the water pump and AC are the only thing driven by that 2nd belt???

OH man, I really screwed up
Thanks for noticing (obviously someone would, heh).
Anyhoo, I knew that but damn look what'll happen if you aren't paying attention. I'm good, but damn when I'm wrong!
Anyhoo, it's hard to see that back pulley in low light esp. w/ rain coming down...I didn't want to continue to keep looking and get my hair all messed up <G>.
You know, MM&FF probably didn't swap out the lower...most likely the upper. Not sure where I got that from.
Look ma, NO CAGE! Hmmmmm... (or did Ford redesign it?)

BFB i would bet there is a cage there. its just prolly on the first pulley. Guess we will find out soon enough eh? I wasn't trying to say 'hah i told ya so' either just pointing out the error =)
My winter project is putting an 03 cobra motor in my fox chassis (its already been done, but to have a 450-500hp reliable combo for less than i can build a rough idling hogged out motor is VERY appealing)

This just in!!!

BFB, maybe you are thinking about the Saleen they have setting on the floor. I think I remember it only having a one belt. Or maybe you just weren't thinking at all.
