Brakes?

Do any of you have track experience w/ the stock brakes? Do they hold up? If not did you get a new system i.e. Brembos, or did you change pads, rotors, or fluid? The stock brakes are fine on the street, but I've heard stopping at 130mph + on the track they will fade. I'd like to modify the stockers because Brembo wants $3700.00 for their front brake kit! Ouch. Thanks for any insight on this matter.

Based on my experience of taking my previous cars on a track, I would say at a minimum you should do the following (I have done this with great results):

1) Install good aftermarket street/track type brake pads....I prefer the Hawk HP Plus pads

2) Replace your brake fluid with Motul 600 racing fluid. This stuff has a MUCH higher boiling point than DOT 3 and is compatable.

Those two things should get you through an open track event pretty nicely and your truck will stop much harder on top of it.

Where can you get the Hawk pads and has anybody done anything with the rotors? I hear that some company has introduced stainless steel rotors.

Stock style rotors will hold up to a point. But as you increase the ablity to keep the pads from fading the next weakest link will show itself and not at the best time!If you go with a aftermarket rotor that has been modified keep in mind what has been done to it.Freezing really does not work as well as they say and cross drilling DOES cause the rotor to crack by putting in stress points not designed into it.It is not will it crack it is HOW long before it cracks.Stan

Whats the average life expectancy for stock brake pads? How many 1,000s ?????
When did you change yours? I think I am due soon.

I had 4000 on my rears when FORD replaced them
for the squealing, and the TURNED my freaking rotors
at that time.

So now I only have ONE turning left on the rears. Hope
they start squealing again so I can get NEW ROTORS !!!

I just notice my right rear pad is cutting a grove into my rotor. Looks like I have to bring it in . What causes something like that? It's not squealing yet and I don't want to wait until is does.

Look for SpikeEngineering on here, I know he races his L and has done some brake work on it. He posted some pix of the stock brakes totally cooked.
My left rear rotor has a small groove in it too. The dealer looked at it a few month ago and said it was "normal". It is going in Monday for the last full warranty trip and I am going to insist they turn the rotors and replace the pads.

Put brembo brakes on front. Cross drilled rotors with hack pads and steel brake lines on rear. Makes a world of difference. Go to

to see the pics.
