Unhappy have a question about octane level????

I just got my JL diablo flipchip in today and the race program states that i need 104octane. I live in Norman, Ok and that is not real common octane around here that im aware of...93 about the highest at the pumps..is there a additive/boost that i can add to get 104? At the track they sell race fuel so im thinkin some of that which is 100 or so mixed with somethin else should work...any help is greatly appreciated

Most race gas is leaded and will destroy your catalytic converters, so be very careful with that 104 Octane stuff ....

If it really requires 104 octane, you can obtain that thru mixing some Torco Unleaded Accelerator to 93 octane. This is a race gas concentrate, not an octane booster(mostly worthless).

I use it at the track .

I was just reading in MM&FFORDS latest issue about Lightning pulleys, chips, octane requirements etc. I am currently running 98 Octane from 94 pump gas with Pennzoil additive.

You can mix your own using Toulene (found at paint shops and paint area's of hardware stores). I have done this several times... and it works great...

I was a bit skeptical at first (mixing my own gas!?!) but I read many info sheets and testimonials as well as talked to guys at the track about it... it's legit and works...

Toulene is 114 octane, so you can use this equation to get the octane you want. (again, I have a jdm chip and pulley and have used this 5 times now, and it works great)

This is for 93 octane... change the 93 to whatever gas you use.

((x*114)+(y*93))/(x+y)=final octane

basically, number of gallons of toulene times its octane, plus the number of gallons of gas times it's octane divided by the total gallons will give you the final octane (simple averaging).

Depending on the store this can be expensive... for 104 octane you need to use 8 parts toulene to 7 parts 93 octane... (that's 104.2 octane...

One tip. run the toulene through a strainer or peice of cheese-cloth before mixing... just to clean out any thing that may have gotten in the can during filling. YOu can buy in 1 gallon, 5 gallon and even 55 gallon drums...

good luck...

I am just asking a question in regards to a older post on toulene.

I am going to purchase some of this stuff. Just to know if I am getting the right thing. How do I identify this liquid. Look? Smell? Colour? What do I use?

Any help from you guys will be useful. Just want the best for my truck.

Toluene

Buy it at the paint supply. Sherwin-Willaims for me.

Mine has a HUGE label "Toluene" It won't be called anything else. Big metal can.

DO NOT smell it. You can easily get knocked out. Toluene is a VERY strong organic solvent (not so good for your hands).

Colour is essentially clear (think gas).

You can get UNLEADED race gas at the track

My opinion is to stay away from Torco race fuel concitrate, all it has done to me when I have used it was to foul my plugs. It does work, but if you use it , plan on changing your plugs after.

Don: That hasn't been my experience. I ran the OEM plugs until I got my 5 lb pulley and when I did change them, they wern't "fouled". Now my BR7s misfire at low rpms but that's there nature. I haven't used any Torco for 8-9,000 miles as it's been too hot to race this summer. I'll check the BR7s for fouling when I get up the gumption to install the Densos.
