Thumbs down NOS backfire & a Fuel Leak = $35,000 loss....

This happened over the weekend here at Richmond Dragway.....

Now for the story.....

This guy was from MD. It was the first pass on a new motor setup or something. He left the line and blew off a fuel pressure gauge on his regulator. He then had a NOS backfire through the carb which started the fuel fire. The track was scared to get close to the car due to the chance of it exploding. It was a Nova drag car, very nice setup with a pro fogger system on it. Needless to say it burnt to the ground and the NOS bottle got so hot and built up pressure it blew up, thats what the picture is of. When it was done, nothing was left but a burnt up motor, tranny, rear, & rollcage....

Yeah, how about the driver? Similar thing happened to a late model cobra a couple weeks ago up to New England Dragway. Wasn't nearly as bad but bad enought to shut the track down for almost two hours.

This brings up a good point, I think there is Insurance availible for Drag Cars. It may be worth it.... His motor only was over $20,000... And now its only worth a paper weight....

"drag car" insurance does not cover it, it only covers your car while its in the trailor, next to the trailor, in your home garage. As soon as its in the staging lanes your insurance ends. Its not to bad expense wise, since its mainly for theft.

most, if not all regular car insurance policies have a "no racing" clause in them.. meaning the policy is void if you wreck/break something whilst racing.

Glad the driver is ok. I seriously doubt a $13 fire extinguisher, or a $500 onboard halon fire system would of put the fire out.

Those NOS drag car burn downs are pretty common. You takes your chances.
