Exclamation Air intake kit causes drop in Boost?!

I just installed an air intake kit and a boost bypass kit.

Before, I routinely hit 10lbs of boost on the stock gauge, now I haven't seen it above 8. What's going on?

Is the air intake kit actually a loss?

which cold air?

if you got a K&N cold air kit for a 01 and newer it will drop ,because they have no 01 and newer kit yet. the one they have currently is foe the 80 mm mass air sensor, this might explain it??

01 yes, K&N no...

JDM intake, it keeps the same MAF and doesn't look like there should be any restrictions....

Coldie,

I had the same problem to. I called JDM On it today actually, this is what Justin said. Once you put any air filter, JDM intake, K*N whatever, you boost guage is not gonna read the same. If the truck isnt stock, then the gauge is worth nothing...so time to invest in a aftermarket gauge..thats what im gonna do, my modding will not stop here. So basically the stock gauge only reads right when your truck is stock, the extra boost is there though.

EXCITED,

Are you sure about what you're saying?

I had a lot of problems with my JL ram air and measured the maf to airfilter tranfer tube at 88mm, BTW I don't think that a ford 90 mm maf is really 90mm because the maf while at the opening is 90mm it does taper into a venture to about~85mm..

As far as the lose of psi well this is normal when the intake is breathing easier. This has been covered many times in this forum, so if you want to see more info you might want to try the search engine.

Actually I saw a drop in boost going from the stock box w/K&N panel to the big conical filter. I know of at least one other L owner who has done so as well, and actually saw a consistent .1 to .2 second slower ET at the track due to the hotter air from the cone filter. Its enough that I just modded my stock airbox for a bottom feed tube (4" flex, drops down to beside the plastic wheel well lining). I'd rather have the cooler air, as it gets damn hot here in FL...

Stock gauge...

I don't really believe that it is the stock gauge "misreading"

Since most aftermarket people splice into the stock gauge, there's nothing wrong with the feed, the gauge may be off, but it should be consistantly off....

I have to believe that the cone filter is a negative.

Does anyone have any proof that the cone filter does any good?

I may have to go back to the stock setup, or wait, get a ram air hood!

I will check mine out tomorrow. Just installed the airforce 1 intake kit tonight but it is raining out right now, so no test run. It is a open air element filter and also has a tunnel on the end with a boot tied to the hole in the fender. I hope I do not loose any boost. The airforce 1 setup sounds similar to the JDM kit.
