1991 GMC Syclone
This thread is going nowhere fast. It started out somewhat informational. My only satisfaction with posting to this thread is that I actually do own a Lightning, that I run at the track, and have fun, win or lose.
The Syclone/Typhoon trucks are very quick but I'd still take a '87 Grand National over one of those anyday. Besides, you get a higher payload and higher towing capacity with the Buick

All you people are ridiculous, arguing over all this petty little crap. Who cares if an L is faster or if a Syclone is faster cant you be satisfied with the fact that you are lucky enough to have a truck that can whoop almost anything on the road. I not trying to say one is better that the other I own an L and a Typhoon. They both kick *** cant you people just be happy with that.
I'm not trying to **** anyone off here Im just sick of all this arguing over somthing as dumb as this. Just be happy with which ever truck you have chosen to buy

SY's may be fast but you will have a hard time getting your girlfriend to ride with you cause the are fugly! I would take my '01 L over a '91 Syclone hands down for all its worth i would put a ricer spoiler on my truck before i was caught in a Syclone. Well maybe that would be taking it a little too far but you guys get my point. Thats my $.02
Re: I've ran a Typhoon
Guys, I've been fortunate enough to purchase BOTH of these vehicles new, and I'll tell ya they are both a blast!
My Sy ran 13.6 @ 96 when it was new and bone stock. The temps were 70 degrees and real humid, plus I was launching at ZERO boost, so there was definitely room for improvement!
My '99 L ran 13.7 @ 99.8mph when it was new and bone stock. The temps were in the 60's and low humidity.
The Lightning has the advantage of the latest technology on its side for sure. At the very least, the ignition is superior IMO. It also has better brakes and a tighter suspension.
The Syclone has some good points too. One is All Wheel Drive which, on the street from a red light, in most cases can't be touched! 1.7 60' times out of street tires! Zero to Sixty in 4.6 seconds! That is still Lightning fast by todays standards(pardon the pun) !Another point is its very limited production - less than 3,000 produced - EVER! And just because the L has better brakes and firmer suspension, that DOESN'T mean the Sy's are bad. This truck handles and stops very well. I have no complaints!
My biggest problem with the L is that Ford is simply producing waaaaay too many for the masses! Sorry, I thought these were 'limited production' trucks. So much for that. I see Gen2 L's just about every day! So far this year I've seen 2 other Syclones and 3 Typhoons! I like that kind of exclusivity.
Really though, I'm not bashing the L. To each his own. Enjoy your ride. Personally, I prefer my Syclone, but I can also fully understand why the Lightning is such a great truck.
Hehe, yup, my Sy is down there right now!
Damn shame my fuel pump will 'only' support 650hp!
Guess I'll be swappin' that out again...

There is a tuner in Pikeville Ky that makes these things scream. He is to the SyTy community what Sal, Jim, and Johnny (and others I just can't recall right now ) are to the L community.

Syclones are cool and all, one sitting in my driveway that runs 13.0's, right next to it is an 01 L that runs 13.0's. Both are modified slightly, both are in very good shape granted one has 10 years of age on it vs 1 year. By far the L is the better vehicle in my opinion and the opinion of the Syclone owner, so much so that the Syclone is for sale
80K miles, very nice shape $14K. If anyone is interested send me an email.
BTW the same guy has a 91 Syclone (yes, he has two of them) with 14K miles, truck was repainted so that is solid gloss black (including all the cladding), has GS Corvette wheels (Factory GM black powder coated 17 x 9 front & 17 x 11 rear) many extras and is for sale for $10K firm. The catch is the original motor has a spun bearing and the tranny has a broken sun shell both easy fixes (No Jokes please) many boxes of spare parts included, just add elbow grease and own a sweetheart.

I really like AWD. My last vehicle had AWD and an 18 sec quarter mile. I used to go prowling for F-bodies and pony cars whenever it rained. It embarassed the heck out of them to be revved, then beat by, a Subaru Forester. Sure, racing in rain/snow is lame, but imagine the fun of 400hp. If the L had it as a $5k option I would've sprung for it, even if it mean losing a few ponies in the driveline.
Those Sy/Tys were VERY quick. They haven't made any in almost a decade. If you want performance in a truck, the blue oval is your only choice.
The King is dead. Long live the King.
