that 3m stuff may protect from rocks but isnt the issue the lights cracking from heat then being splashed with cold water which causes the lens to crack?

So far as I can tell its a thermal stress crack, from the hot lense being suddenly cooled by water (fog/rain/dew). Both of my lights have similiar crack patterns, which would be one hell of a coincidence for rock chips... especially with a chip free front fascia...

UFOs maybe? Malignant light seeking rocks? Idunno...

I use mine all the time when its dark and now ever more that i have the fog light mod, since march 2000 and 34K miles later i have had no problem with them. Maybe the SOuth Florida humidity has to do with it?????

For those with reluctant dealers

My brother is a serevice manager at a Ford dealership. He was in town this weekend and I showed him my driving/fog lights. Yes they are both cracked. The first thing he did was to run his fingernail over them... and said get em replaced, they are faulty.

Apparently if it was rocks or road stuff, the lens would have been damaged on the outside and he would have felt the damage when he inspected the lights...

I've had mine replaced already. From reading your posts, these things are junk. Does anybody have a good suggestion for a solid trouble-free product?

fwiw - I noticed last week that those 4.5" aftermarket sealed beam fog/spotlamps you see on the front of motorcycles (like Harleys/etc) will fill up the pocket rather nicely. They are also the same size as those used in those wall-mounted emergency lighting fixtures in office buildings. The housings come in both chrome and black, and the bulbs are rather cheap to replace. I have a pair of them on the front of my Guzzi, with some clear lens 70,000 candlepower halogen spot bulbs in them. Plenty bright! They also come in amber, clear fluted, RED and BLUE!

The housings have the mounting post in the wrong location (side instead of back), so some modification would be necessary.

I also noticed the new GL1800 Gold Wing accessory fog lamps might also work. They are a little smaller (like 3.5" or so) but they look great. Only problem is price: Honduh dealers want $280 for a pair.

I've seen some people using the 'squaroid' PIAAs in the the black PPS housings. They also have a side/bottom mount so I think you'd have to customize them a bit.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Argh, I had my lights replaced today. I called Stoneguard and they did not recomend using Stoneguard on 2001 Lightning fog lamps. They said it would burn and discolor.

Has anyone found some good direct replacement lights or covers?

I used it. The center of the film will turn brown from the heat of the lense. I drove around with it for almost 2 yrs looking like that. The lense finally cracked last week from a rock or something. At least the film kept the lense from falling on to the floor.

I think we should all start mailing broken glass to SVT. Maybe they'll get sick of it eventually and do something. (Just kidding)

Something you can do is call 1-800-Ford-SVT everytime you take the car in for fog lights. LET THEM KNOW THAT WE ARE UPSET!

I had an extended conversation with the SVT guys which
ended with "There is NO way to tell FORD what's wrong,
other than a plethora of warranty claims." If they see
a large number of claims, they look at teh problem. So
as I posted Waaay back in May or so, have the dealer
replace the dayum things ... If everyone did so, FORD
may fix the problem.
