Thumbs up New rear upper shock mounts

For those of you that have lowered your trucks, I am sure you know it changes the shock angles. For me this was causing the rear shocks to bind, and make some weird noises. I just installed some custom upper mounts that have hiem joints which got rid of the binding.

Now the noises are gone and the rear suspension is working much better.

Don,
Does it still mount to the same location on the truck?

They mount in the same plase, what You can't see it in the pic is that you have to drill 2 screws to hold the red bracket on.

If I see it correctly, you've bolted round flat stock to the stock location with the rubber, etc. and welded two ears to accept the heim joint which is threaded on to the end of the shock. Correct? (and painted it red).

Nice!

Right now it is a one off peice, that someone did for me as a favor.
Right now I think it would only work with the QA1's, unless you wanted to cut some of the threads off on your shocks.

Spike there is no rubber in this setup, the round part is bolted right to the metal where stock shocks would go through the frame, There are there two tabs welded onto the round peice with holes for a bolt to go through.

Then a Hiem jount is screwed onto the end of the QA1 shock.

I will ask the guy who made it if he can give more info.

I will get it up on a lift and post a better pic tomorow evening.

Thumbs up

Don,
That set up looks great, and by the color of the one off pieces that you got it is a dead give away who you got them from. The color matches the rest of his own suspension pieces. He does great work and I have a few of his special pieces to make my truck handle better. I look forward to more pictures and some more info on the parts once you get clearance to release it.

Dan

I only had a 2" rear drop. Maybee it is just the urethane bushings that come with them, but they were binding. Maybee with rubber bushings there is enough flex in the bushing that it is ok.

I bet there are a lot of lowered trucks who have similar problems that I was having, maybee many of them don't even know it. All I know that my truck is handling much much better now that I put these new mounting brackets on

No boot to cover the shaft on the QA1? Dirt on the shaft will only wear out those seals quicker! Am I wrong to think this?

Binding

Hi Don,

Did you ever use the stock shocks with your lowered set up? Mine is currently lowered 1.5" in the back and I intend to add another 1.5". In your opinion, can I expect to incur proplems with my Bilsteins. What exactly occurs when you have binding.

Thanks,
Dion

Hmm, I was getting a slight squeak in my #4 shock setting, wonder if it was from this.

Did you drill down from above to mount that? How'd you get those two screws in there?

Dan your truck is a 2000?
If so the hole for the shocks is smaller I think. I bet when you saw JDM shock setup he had two different thread sizes, smaller for the 99 and 2000 and larger for the 2001 and 2's. My shocks came with the smaler threads whick may heve been the problem for me.

Mine wasn't a squeek I was getting a lot of clunking noises.

As far as drilling I made a template, and the srews go in from the backside

I didn't notice any binding problems with the stock shocks. I am no suspension expert, I just know this solved my problems.

Ah, okay, yeah, that makes sense... I had no fitment problems with the shocks at all when they were installed (for the rear).

Apparently also, on some of the trucks (or rear shocks?) the bottom bushing is too small and needs spacers to fill in open space in the shock mount...mine fit flush, side to side, no spacers were needed.

Once we figured out that we had to lower the control arm to install the front shocks, every other piece fit on the truck without any issue at all, was a pretty easy put together with the right tools and a lift. (hence why I didn't do it myself).
