Tranny Woes?
Tranny Woes?
Hey guys. I'm new to this forum but it very interesting and helpful for us L owners. My question is this. When driving normally, my truck doesn't shift into 3rd right away. It accelerates in a no mans land gear about 500-750 rpms above what it normally is in 3rd. It still accelerates (though it doesn't seem as strong a pull) so it doesn't feel like its slipping but it definetely can be felt when it does go into 3rd and the rpm's drop. Also, as the tranny heats up after freeway travel, the 3rd to 4th shift sometimes has a jump briefly in RPM's during the shift. I've tried to explain the problem to a dealer twice and after their drive, they say nothing's wrong. Anyone out there have any feedback or have experienced similar occurances?
If you are using a chip, I think you have a chip problem. If not, the PCM may be sending the wrong signal(or at the wrong time) to the torque convertor??? The dealer should be able to 'see' this on their equipment.

I have experienced this also... it seems to happen at 1/2 throttle for me, when going through second, it trys to shift to third, only it doesn't make it... it continues to accelerate, though a bit mushy like and then after about 6 seconds is slides into 3rd frimly... I have 1800 miles in my truck and it's been doing it from day 1. The dealer said it's normal??? the torque converter isn't locking. Happens with or without my chip...
Well at least I can see I wasn't smoking crack and it has happened to other people. Mine too did it from the beginning. Spike, when the dealer replaced it, did the new box do it also? And have you guys seen the jump in rpm's from 3rd to 4th also? Mine's bone stock. But the info is good that the chip didn't help it as I thought it might.
Without going into the complexities of how a transmission functions it sounds like what you are feeling is the torque converter clutch engaging [also known as lock up] this is when the engine and transmission mechanically couple to eliminnate converter slippage once the vehicle no longer requires it. It is perfectly normal.
