Airaide, as is or without sides?

Anybody using the Airaide filter/box setup take the front and back sides off for better air flow? Seems like unless your driving thru water filled potholes all the time the added splash protection isn't necessary.

i have the airraid ,a friend of mine and i took off the front and made a mud flap thingy ( i know, real technical) to go from the side wall to the front or the truck. its is kinda gaudy looking but more air is able to enter the filter and the blower whine is a lot louder and it still keeps the hot air from the engine out of the filter.

hope this helps....chris

oh, and the sides are for keeping the engine air out of the filter, ive never heard of them being for splash protection.

I get the hot engine air issue but if that is a concern why do so many after market cone filter setups not include an air box?

once you get moving, the underhood temp cools off..

i have a airaid, but i leave the side panels on because it looks nicer than an exposed filter.

according to test that I was quoted this week the temperature difference between outside air and underhood air once a 25mph speed is achieved is less than a 10 degree difference. That would probably not make too much of a difference in HP. For that reason, I just ordered the Airforce 1 kit.

Hi, thanks for the replies so for...I talked with a guy at AirAide...he said the full box was for both water protection (being a truck and all..ok) and a engine bay air barrier....but he said it doesn't matter much if your moving (like some of you point out). He said for Dyno testing it matter as they get vehicles good a warmed up and they are stationary so the numbers will be better. But he did point out that most of their filter applications for cars and trucks don't include air boxes....so he said do it if you want.

When I had my Airaid installed (it's for sale if anyone's interested), I removed only the front panel. I felt this configuration kept the warm engine air away from the intake, but also allowed more air to get to the filter when the truck was moving.
