Cracked windshield----cost.............

On the way to lunch on I-75 today, a rock was thrown up by a dump truck and put 2 long(5" & 8") cracks in my w/s behind the left wiper.

I called State Farm and was reminded that I had a $500 deductable but then she offered to call a local glass shop and see if she could get me a 'good' price. She called me back with a quote of $268.98 for a Guardian wind shield--same weight/thickness as the OEM. They will come out and put it in tomorrow.

Any comments on the quote......................???

Dan

Windshield replacement due to cracks is not
subject to deductible in many states. (Safety Issue)

Ask the insurance lady again ... Maybe she is new?

Definately check on that. As SVT_KY mentioned, here in KY, state laws say it's a safety issue and that replacement must be made without charging the customer a deductible.

I had my 1998 Explorer XLT's glass changed TWICE due to rock damage while spinning up and down I-65.

I just went thru this a month ago on I-85 in Atlanta... cost me my deductable, $200. State Farm told me Florida and one other state covered all costs... Don't remember which other state. Oh, and with all the rain we had last weekend, it started leaking!

I live in Florida and there is a law that says $0 deductible for windshields and in any other state I was told is $100.00 deductible so make sure you question the person about that I hope this helps

I have State Farm with a $100 comp deductible. When a dump truck threw a rock and cracked the heated $700 windshield of my previous Forester, they wanted to repair it (free to me). I reminded them that the crack was dead center in my line of sight, and that ANY optical distortion was unacceptable. They still wanted to repair it. I reminded them that I could easily be distracted and have an accident, which would make me want to switch all my policies to another company.

They replaced it.

The windshield in my motorhome ( look in my gallery ) cost $4000 to replace. It's got a rock chip in it right now. Thank God for insurance.

I believe all State’s that require safety inspection (doesn't include city inspection) have a law governing cost of safety equipment (including w/s) replacement.
I believe here in GA your SOL... However 268 bucks sounds really cheap (good price) to me... In 94 I had my 93stang window replaced and the glass company charged my insurance company 230! That might have been one of those "markup" things because the insurance company was footing the bill though.

I had a bolt/rock hit my current windshield and left a chip in it and the my insurance payed for that to be fixed. When I had my 98 Lariat I had to get a new windshield due to a raock cracking it and they charged me $50 but it has now gone up to $100.

Dan,

It cost me $279 (tax included) for a replacement windshield installed. Call a few of the glass places and check their prices. I got three phone quotes and they were all with $25 of each other.

BTW, atleast it wasn't a kid throwin' them.

I have state farm as well and from all my years (7 to be exact, lol ) any windsheild damage we had here had the deductible applied to them as well before replacement. I have also heard the same from other friends with various other insurance companies...but thats in Oklahoma.

Eric

PS > my replacement windshield on my L cost the company right about what your quote was for Dan.

call Safe-Lite auto glass. State Farm is their biggest customer. ask for "original" ford glass. there is a huge difference. be glad we don't have the "heads up display" in our windshields.
