Is there any way to test coil packs?
theres also cheaper way to do it. you can buy a spark plug tester its like a test light but with out the bulb. you take the end that has the alligator clips and stick it in your spark plug wire that you took off the spark plug end. now youll start your truck making sure the tester part isnt touching metal, then youll hold the tester over a ground and it will be like a little lighting bolt, you should be able to hold it about and inch and a 1/4 before it stops if its less than that your coil pack is bad. But one thing you cant forget is your CANT TOUCH THE TRUCK at all with your body if you do you will get a huge suprise. thats the way i learn to do it in my auto mechanics class, good luck
that will work to see if the coil is shot, but i have heard of them going bad, (e.g. not putting the voltage out that they should, but still fireing somewhat) when i first had a hesiation with my truck i pulled all the c.o.p.'s and tested all possible connector combinations for resistance, not much varation, needless to say i didnt find the bad one that way..
ive also heard of people just changing them after 30k, expensive but probally worth it, the one that usually goes out is passengers side farthest back, due to coolant getting on it..

L in Detroit, do you have the tester and does it work to see if the coil pack is not working as good as it should and not all of the way dead?
I have a little miss and suspect a coil pack may be going out on my truck. I have disconnected the coil packs individually but there is a big difference when the coil packs are disconnected and the little miss the truck has.

Since I did have this miss when the truck is warmed up I pulled the coil packs to look at the resistance. My father had a coil pack go bad on his truck last week. It was the #3 coil pack. The resistance was 4.35kohms. He has never washed the engine, no coolant leaks. 2002 4.6 F150 55K miles.
Here are the results from my resistance test, no problems that I can see. The results in k ohms I think.
1. 5.76
2. 5.71
3. 5.69
4. 5.68
5. 5.67
6. 5.66
7. 5.58
8. 5.56
I may take some out of the 6.8 and put them in my truck. The wife will never know.

I wrote the resistance on each of the coil packs before I reinstalled them with a white out pen. I took 4 out to check the resistance this morning. I used the same digital multimeter.
results in KOHMs
1. 5.76 before 5.49 after
2. 5.71 before 5.52 after
3. 5.69 before 5.54 after
4. 5.68 before 5.49 after
Either it shows that tesing them this way doesn't work, I don't know how to use a multimeter, or that something is wrong with the coil packs.
Anyway I picked up 4 new coil packs from Ford this morning and the other 4 should be here Monday. $48.25 a piece.

they are all within 10 percent, whenever ele circuits are being tested there is always a 10 percent error, the humidity in the air the two days could have thrown it off.
270 ohms on one
190 on two
150 on three
190 on four
270 ohms is only 4.6 percent, dont worry about that difrence..
and sorry i didnt reply before, no i dont have the tester, i was thinking about getting one, i have had a miss, sounds like a wet rag in the muffler when i get on it since i bought the truck, i suppect a coil pack, since the entire exhaust is new within the last month or so, and the tester is 250 or so and all 8 new coils are 400+, i get this test them and still be about 300..

Like I said I ordered some and got 4 today. It feels as if it accelerates quicker with the 4 installed. It also feels quicker from a stop. I'll have to go to the track and look at some times. The packs only cost me $48 each so I got a deal.
for 48 bucks a piece these things should su.... well never mind but for 400 for a complete set they should do something..
im close to needing all replaced but not looking forward to it, at what mileage does ford recommend them being all swapped?
