Anyone know how to read spark plugs?
Anyone know how to read spark plugs?
I dont have pics of them yet, but my plugs (NGK TR6's) where black on the porcelain part and the electrode's where white. Some of the electrode's had a crusty brownish/white buildup on them and the one's that did had what I assume to be oil on the threads.
Can someone tell me whats going on in the engine by this description? Im gonna go pick up a new set of NGK's in the morning and change them out.

From your description and after looking at my Haynes manual's inside rear cover, It sounds like you have 'carbon deposits'--"Dry, sooty deposits indcate a rich mixture--can cause hard-starting, mis-firing, or hesitation. Recommendations: Make sure the plug has the correct heat-range. Check for clogged air filter."
And, I would add--ask JDM about the a/f ratios--some are as rich as '11.1/1. You may be getting some of the residue from any octane booster you have used???

LIGHNINROD-Thanks! Are your BR7E's a colder or hotter plug than the TR6's? I may check into the TR5's too if they are hotter.
Speaking of residue, I have been using a gallon of Toluene to 1/2 tank of Texaco 93 to stop detonation problems. Truck still runs and idles smooth, just thought Id check the plugs and thats what I found.
Thanks again!

The BR7EFs are 'colder' than a coal miner's hemorrhoids
! When I change again, I'm going to the Denso Irridiums. The 7s foul-out and misfire in my eng. around town--at low rpms. Now, at the track--they're fine but others are getting better results with the Densos.
The TR5s are 'hotter' than the 6s but I think you need at least the heat-range of the 6s with the extra boost you have. Better fouling plugs than a detonation situation. You ought to think about the Densos unless you're one of those 1 hr. plug changers--LOL

LIGHTNINROD- Ive thought about the Densos. Do you know which one's have the same heat range as the TR6's? Ive seen IT20,22,and 24's.
awhittle-I think Ill wait and catch Jim @ FFW here in Ennis and let him check my chip. I just hate knowing I cant drive it until he sends me my chip back after a reburn!
