Tire Wear

Went to rotate my tires and noticed that both front tires have worn down to the steel belts on the inside tread. Anybody know of any major camber issues ???

The left control arm may have loosened its adjustment. Do you hear a 'clunk' sound when turning while parking?

I had the clunk fixed about 8 months ago. I haven't had a problem since.

Cool

One possible factor for tread to wear uneven on either edges or just center of tread is not running correct tire pressure at all times. With low tread life tires already, it doesnt take much variation in pressure at a few miles to create problems with this. Btw, this is just my .02 and only a possible factor, not meaning that it is an any way your problem. Later.

Stupid question, but did you have them re-do your alignment when they fixed the clunk? Are you sure the control arm hasn't slipped again?

I've seen lots of outside edge wear - agressive cornering on underinflated tires. I can't recall ever seeing inside edge wear, except on slammed Civics that haven't had their camber corrected. Sometimes long distance touring motorcycles will wear their left side of the tread out first if those miles were done on 2-lane roads (heavily crowned).

I assume that the dealer did an alignment when the clunk got fixed, but now that I think about it, I doubt it. I got new tires today and I saved the fronts for the dealer to check out.

Thumbs up Garage=Compressor

It's nice to have a compressor in your garage. I check my tires every couple of weeks and fine I am always making adjustments. Air pressure doesn't sound like it's all of your problem but keep a close eye on it. Cheap insurance as these tires cost big bucks. Also works good blowing water out of the cracks and crevices after a wash.

Unhappy

Your dealer fixed the clunk? Very unlikely that he did it correctly. Ford's TSB instructs the dealer to install star washers, which are virtually guaranteed to slip. The only permanent fixes are to tack weld the washers (not so good) or use Herb Jackson's washers (cool and elegant, but pricey- until you add up tire replacement costs). In either case you need to also install a cam bolt kit to get the alignment right.
