Spade$: Huh? Do you mean protection on cold starts, or in terms of longevity of the oil. Please explain.
Here is what I think:
The first number is the cold viscosity. A 5 weight would flow more easily that a 10. I would think a 5 would be more easily pumped to the top end on a cold startup.
The second, "w" means it's a multigrade, if I remember correctly.
The third, "30" in both cases here, is the warmed-up "hot" viscosity. Both would have the same here.
The spread between the first and last numbers is an indication of the amount of the fragile long-chain viscosity index improvers added to the formulation. A 5-30 has had more of these added, and is more suspectible to breakdown than a 10-30. The 5-30 base stock would break down (suffer viscosity reduction) more quickly than a 10-30.

hugo,
if you come here often enough, you will see that there are a wide variety of opinions on this topic. My opinion is that you use what you were sent. Its Spring and you dont live in the Great White North so cold startup shouldnt be a huge issue.. I run 5W30 Mobil 1 and am happy with it...

Use an Amsoil 5w-20 or a 5w-30 its a better synthetic and its cheaper than royal purple!! I have 20,000 on my L and 300,000+ on my work truck with Amsoil and never any problems!!!Just my .02 cents worth!!
