Ok.... You guys can flame me all you want, but this is the truth. Two nights ago I raced a buddy in a '99 GT and BARELY beat him. The Stang has an x-pipe, catback, and shifter. My '00 Lightning has full Bassani exhaust, electric fan, filter, and nitrous (which obviously wasn't on). We first took off from a 40 mph roll and were pretty even until about 80. He pulled me a little and I ended up on his back bumper at 100. We then caught a light and he was behind my back bumper before we were across the intersection, but he pulled back to my door by 90. Now, here are a couple of things to keep in mind, however... My truck had a full tank of gas and was carrying a full 15 lb. nitrous bottle. Also, his Stang is a stripo and has the 16 inch wheel package (I believe the overall height of the 16 inch package is less than the 17 inch package). We are also at about 7000 ft. of altitude and blower cars have proven to run worse up here than N/A cars. So all I'm saying is that I believe a '99-up Stang can hang with a '99-'00 Lightning in the 1/4.

someone on here is lying.....

i was in peoria last year with my cousin. he had a slightly modded 99 GT pushing about 300hp.

we were on our way back from a dealership looking at lightnings when a white lightning was coming up behind us.
i said let run em....

he got even with us and looked down at us cause we had been doing about 20 MPH in a 50 so he could get by us....

my cousin revved his engine and so did the L.

he looked and smiled....

they both took off and the lightning was gone.
we took off from about 50 MPH rolling. and the L had at least 2 car lenghts on usby the time we hit 100

Traded my GT for a L

I traded my 99 GT for 01 Lightning
With a cheep K&N I ran 13.8's.
No BS,
My 01 L is faster than my GT, but also faster than 99's and 00's.

Not trying to fire things up again but a GT can (w/ a good driver)
hang on to a 99 L's bunper.
You get your launch down pat w/ the Stang and you can be brave.

W/ auto GT's. Ha ha ha, lol

Ever heard of YMMV (your milage may vary)? There are way too many variables for this to be even debated. Not all cars/trucks are created equal from the factory. Some just plain run better and last longer than others

Hey guys, this is my first post so I just want to say "Hello" to everyone. But anyways I raced a 99+ GT the first night I had my truck. I beat it by about 3-4 trucks lengths twice and he got the jump both times b/c I spun.I have no idea if his was stock or not b/c I didn't talk to him he turned off behind me. So that is my input. -Mat-

I've raced a GT from a 60-70mph roll and it hung with me with very little problem. I think top end speeds they can hang, but on the track; no competition. The GT may have been moded, though.

To attempt to answer the original question:
If your intercooler is failing or is failed - anything from the pump going to leaking fluid, then it will affect your GO- no question about it. We all know the huge difference 25+/- in temperature effects our L's - and that is exactly what the intercooler is attempting to do; lower intake air temperature.

I do know that the more I drive mine, the faster it seems to go. I now have almost 14k miles on her.

To respond to the question about if the upgraded intercooler helps. . .YES. I noticed that the engine sounded a little diffrent, and after they reflashed the computer- OH YEAH!!!

But I did the air filter and the muffler at the same time, so that helped a little. The major thing though is the intercooler/re-flash.

Later,
whats with the re flash??

Intercooler Recall

For everyone that was asking about the intercooler recall, they are supposedly running it until september (read that on another forum, so might not be true). Mine isn't leaking, but from my understanding, they redesigned it so I might as well get it. My dealer has the parts in stock and said that it will take half the day to do. After chatting with a local 99' lightning owner, he was saying the only problem he has is the fluid keeps running low on the intercooler resevoir. I told him about the recall and how you have to inquire about it otherwise it won't get done. I asked the dealer why and he said since it isn't a safety recall, you won't be informed. So my advice to everyone is get the recall done before it is too late.

This could help

Or it could stir things up again

Car and Driver tested a GT and ran a 14.0 in the 1/4.
Also tested a 01 Lightning and it ran 13.8.

What is that about a 1 1/2 car length.

There is alot more driver error in a stick mustang, Im sure alot of long tme proud Stang owners could do a better job that C&D.

Just the same for us L owners,

Hey:

My '99GT Mustang ran 13.90 bone stock on street tires with a half tank of gas and the spare in the trunk.
My buddy's '99 Lightning ran a best of 13.85 stock. I don't find this guy's story that hard to believe.

These are drag strip numbers. This is totally different than BS racing on the street, or from a 40-50mph roll.

Reaction time isn't accounted for in drag strip ET, which makes up for a lot in street racing stories that never seem to bear out at the strip.

Also from a 40-50mph roll, a Lightning has a HUGE advantage over a stick mustang (or vette for that matter).

Also, for all of you near stockers, I've seen stock Z06s run 12.60s all day long at the strip. I've heard of 12.30s.

Steve
