Question Spark plug threads?

I need some info on the heli-coil type inserts that some people have put in to keep the plugs from blowing out. Where to get them, how hard is it to do, any probs with it long term, etc.

Cool I may be wrong......

but I don't think having helicoils installed will "keep the plugs from blowing out." You'll still have only 4-5 threads holding the coil in and 4-5 threads of the helicoil holding the plug. Yes, the coil is steel not aluminum--and I mught be thinking 'wrong'(and CornerCarver will tell you it isn't the first time ).

They may be used to 'repair' a head but 'hold' any better????

Btw:

I think you would have to lift the cab off of the eng. to be able to get to the plug holes. I don't think you need to worry about the need for helicoils if you install the pluge properly. According to Sal, run them in snug/finger-tight and then 1/16 of a turn more . Don't go 'too tight' or you'll risk weakening the threads. I d/k of any plugs that have loosened, much less blown out using this method.

Heli-Coils will stregthen the threads. The inserts are 18-8 stainless steel work hardened to 220,000psi. You will have to remove your heads to install them. The basic procedure is this: drill out the existing hole with the supplied bit, tap the new (STI) threads with the supplied tap, in stall the insert with the supplied installation tool, break off the driving tang on the insert. Repeat 7 more times and you won't blow any more plugs.
