Question 0-60 Mph: Once & For All!

OK, I know this has probably come up before, but the search utility is down and Jupiter and Uranus are in alignment - meaning it's time to resurrect a dead horse for additional beating.

What I want to know is: What is the REAL 0-60 MPH time for a stock 2001 Lightning? (99-00 Lightnings are welcome to reply for comparison too, because I'm not sure if there is a difference!)

Ford literature claims 5.8 seconds, but I find that hard to believe. Since the Lightning is a truck, there haven't been too many reviews in the usual car magazines. A few tested the 99 model when it was new, but not many bothered with the 2001 - which is why you don't see too many documented figures. What times have magazines achieved, and what times have YOU all been able to achieve?

Yes I know some of you are going to quip "Who cares about 0 to 60 MPH? The 1/4 mile is more important, etc. etc" Regardless, I still want to know what you all have to say because a friend of mine is giving me all kinds of grief about the Lightning being a dog to 60 MPH.

Thanks in advance - I'm hoping we can shatter the 5.8 second myth...

not that it's written in stone, but if you look at most tests in the mags, vehicles that run 11's "usually" have 0-60's in the 3's, 12second 1/4's in the 4's, and 13second 1/4's in the 5's. my 99 g-teched "stock" in the high 5's with the crappy 1-2 shift taking, like a week&a1/2,or something

Well, here's my take on the subject, for what it's worth...

Generally, maufacturer numbers are slower than actual vehicle performance (if they were true, 99-00s would be 14.4 second trucks). Figures for 0-60 mph are hardly ever disputed because in all honesty, nobody really cares about them. They are not used in any form of racing, just pretty much for sales. However, magazines do test 0-60, and I've seen reviews with numbers in the 5.4 second range for the 01s. I've seen guys G-tech in the 5.2-5.4 range for 01s.

I can tell you this-- in my opinion, the 99-00s are way faster 0-60. All the 01s I've driven stock vs 99-00s stock we slugs off the line, until they get a few mods on them, then they tear azz.

0-60 Times

Well i have a g-tech that i use quite often on my truck for testing mods along with dynoing them, and when my truck was all stock i was running 5.20's all day long on F1's and now with my added mods i have ran a best of 4.03 spinning on Drag radials! My g-tech is very accurate when i compared it to the track ET on several occasions. What i have found out is that most g-techs are within 1 tenth at the track but on open roads i have found that depending on what surface you are on (asphalt or concrete)you will have different results that may vary as much as 3 tenths on different roads!

There are many 'variables'...........

F1s or ET Streets? For instance, if I hammer the F1s, they go up in smoke(mine is not stock) whereas, other more experienced guys might be able to feather them and not go up in smoke.

Road/track surface? Hot asphalt--or concrete? Incline or decline of the road? What season--air temps?

I don't mean to be negative but I honestly don't know how to answer your question.... I do know this, they're mighty quick !

Car & Driver tested stock 01 at 5.2 (and showed themselves on their tv program doing it, which looked to involve burning through a set of F1s)

If you're English like me, 0-60 matters - it's our standard measure of sprint performance (small country and all that)

Actually we now quote 0-62 mph which is 100kph

To answer your queston without really answering it!

This is my firm belief.....There are not many stock L's running around.

I think an average L has an air system, chipped, with an flowmaster or magnaflow... IMO on the right surface and driver a 4.5 - 4.7 0-60 is not unusual. I've raced many Z06 and have never lost, most where races up to what city traffic could handle so 60-80 max.

Hope this helps... Oh I'm getting the numbers from memory when the big G-tec debate was going on a few years ago.

Exclamation Depends on quality of air

0-60 Mph is a measurement that just like 1/4 mile times is variable. This is mainly due to changing humidity and air temp. I own a highly modded 2000 L that runs low 12's @ 110 MPH plus, but if the present weather conditions are not favorible, my ET's will suffer, so racing is kind of like women, it all depends on what kind of mood they're in, take it for what it's worth, John H.

Sal,

In you response you said that in you opinion the 99-00L are faster than 01-02L. How is it then that they are better in the 1/4.

No flame intended. Just curious

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone questioned that .

It's really all the in calibration. The stock 01 PCM calibration is horrible from the factory. The 99-00 calibrations were way better, and it showed more on the bottom end. Even thought the 01s have 3.73s, MOST of the one's I've driven stock, just didn't have the off the line snappiness the 99-00s had. But once you put a good chip in there, with a better calibration, they wake right up.

As for 01s being faster in the 1/4, it's all in the top end. Ask any 99-00 owner who raced a friend when they got thier 01. The same response from each- "I pulled them off the line, but about 75mph they started walking away".

Plus trucks vary as well. While the best realistic stock 01 time I've heard to date has been in the 13.2-13.3 range, I've also seen some slow azz ones too. As a matter of fact, my own 01 ran a pathetic 14.10 stock, whereas my 99 ran 13.80 stock!

Good point!!!

Really good observation Sal, every one of these trucks is a little different, and they all want exact numbers. Go out and have a good time with what you got, and be happy that they made this beast, John H.

Sal,
What did they do to the '01s that hurt the bottom end? Fuel, spark?
Why would they screw it up? It seems like the 3.73s would have helped and they could have just left the calibration alone.

Thanks.
