Update on my search for road race tires
I emailed Kumho tires to see if I could use them on my L for road racing. This is their response:
Tom,
I've checked with out light truck tire engineer. He says that the 285/30-18 will carry 1433 pounds at max inflation pressure which should be 44 psi. Your truck weight will be close to the max limit on the tires. Kumho does not currently offer anything larger. Give it a try. Good luck and thanks for considering Kumho
tires!

I'm not crazy about the "Gice it a try" and "Good luck" part, but the choices are limited, so I will try them when my BFGs wear out this summer.
Spike - if your out there, in regards to your calculations in my previous post - one source told me that the 1433 pounds is the rating for going straight on a smooth surface, not cornering at high speeds which would put more stress on the sidewall. But then someone else told me that the BFGs have a lower weight rating than the Kumho's so I would be better off than I was before. And I never had trouble with the BFGs. So I'm not too concerned with the Kumho's and they come with more tread so hopefully they will last longer.

I figured there would be some "slop" in the max load rating, but I wasn't positive. I hate to think my tire might blow while rounding a turn. I'm comfortable with the stats of the Kumho, but I will keep my eyes open for an 18 inch tire with a higher load rating.
Every time there is a safety issue, I make lots of phone calls (those who received them know I look at almost every item, down to the valve stems and caps). One that I made to Ruslow was regarding the load rating of the road race tires. My concern was the dynamic load that would be put on the front tires. After talking with him about the specifics, I wasn't concerned about the tires blowing out on a high speed corner or braking zone. I still inspect the tires before and after every run.
