Got a email from Herb Jackson
I am starting to hear the clunk when I turn the wheels real sharp and my truck has 1400 miles. How soon do I need to find a correction for the problem? Should I approach the dealership with it first? I say "clunk" but it is almost like a rubbing sound at times. Not too sure about what to do. TIA,
My 99 didn't have clunk after 30,000, but I got some washers from Herb anyway. The alignment guy said they don't fit in the holes. Also got the upper kit installed. now 48k, still no clunk, but it did slip once and ate both front tires on the inside edge.
I had to get my alignment done yesterday, due to a new set of F-1's. I welded the washers to the A frames. Guess what. It still clunks
Yes, I welded the right ones. Time to go searcing for another loose part.

There are two "clunks". One happens when you go hard over bump, where the bolt moves in the A-arm hole. That is the one that the washers fix. The other occurs when you turn hard (as when backing up in a parking lot). This requires lubing of the stops.

As Baddog said, your problem seems to be the steering stops rubbing. Just put some heavy grease on them and the noise will go away.
I noticed some movement in the A arm on my L when it was new after I heard "the clunk". For some reason the clunk went away on its own and I haven't heard it for over 1.5 years. I looked this past weekend when I was cleaning the underneath that there doesn't appear to be any recent signs of movement. I guess it fixed itself? I know no one fixed it, because the first time it ever went to the dealership was couple of months ago for the intercooler fix.
