Problems with a chip

Its not my truck thank goodness

I have a friend with a 2001 lightning he just added a 3lb lower and a chip burned to match the mods. Also NGK tr5's gaped at .040.

We cleaned the PCM 3 times now there is NO trace of goo on any of the prongs top or bottom. We even used some denatured alcohal to make sure they were spotless.

when the truck is in vac there does not seem to be any problems. BUT when it hits boost SOME times the truck will stumble and the RPM will drop. It happens most of the time at freeway speeds when the accelorator is pressed to 1/2-3/4 down. As soon as it sees boost . I am not sure if it is the motor doing something strange or when it down shifts ? It did it with the stock plugs so we changed to tr5s and it still does it.

Twice it has actualy died and had to be pulled over and at a dead stop then fired right back up.

Any ideas ? or where should we start to look. If the chip is removed and we keep the boost under 10 it does not do it or it has not yet anyways. He dont want to hit more than 10lbs without the chip Big sissy hehehe.

I was thinking it might be a bent pin on the chip itself ? but they all look ok. How do you go about cleaning the pins on the chip ? maby they have some goo on them ??

ok some questions on my head....

Are you sure the chip dosent have any messed up pins?
Are you sure its for the right year?
Are all the coil packs plugged in?
can you check the fuel pressure with a test gauge on the fuel rail?
did you tape the chip in place really good?

Socal,

I know you have a 01 as well. Can you try your chip in it?

The code on the chip matches the cpu code of the truck unless the programmer just made a mistake an the program ?

I don't really want to try it on my truck I dont need any problems hehehe what a friend snicker

I think all the coil packs are good it idles fine and did it before and after a plug change. Autotap shows no misfires.

The chip was installed and duct tape was used to hold it in place. We did not modify the cpu holding bracket but it does not look like the chip is being pushed out its in there SOLID.We put tape over the chip and then around the cpu and back over the tape ends that covered the chip.

I took a quick look at the chip last time we had it out and they look ok ? but what does a bad pin look like ? and what would be a good way to clean them to make sure no goo is on the chip ?

Any ideas on a cheep place to pick up a guage to check the fuel pressure ? and what should it read ?

'00WhiteLightneeen you have mail But I don't think its the programmers fault unless the chip is bad

SouthernCal:

You have mail--------I'd be very surprised if it's the PCM pins. Btw, you don't have to just 'clean' the PCM contacts, you have to scrape a little of the tin-coating off too. When you get down to brass--STOP scraping. Then clean with alcohol.

I believe it is a 'contact' problem.

Socal, i had the same problem with a superchip that i had tuned here at a local aftermarket car and truck shop. First, My truck kept shutting down, even with the chip secured to the PCU. So i took it out and cleaned it over and over again thouroughly..This fixed the shut down but when i'm driving on the highway and decide to punch it not even WOT it felt like the truck was shuttering or bouncing off a speed limiter.. Does this sound familiar? My problem I feel is that it was a really bad tuned program..When i took the chip out, it was fine. So recently i had JDM burn me a chip and its fine now. No skips or anything...Do you have the flip chip? Thats what i had...

Thanks for all the info guys and all the personal mail on the problem.

Funny you should say the rev limiter. I had a 99 Camaro SS manual and it feels EXACTLY like when bouncing off the rev liiter

"That" doesn't sound like a 'contact' problem--maybe the chip isn't programmed for that specific truck/L?

it was purchased used from someone with a 2001 and the code on the chip matched the one on the truck computer. It was also reprogramed by a tunner in SoCal while the truck was there. So in my mind It should be the correct year. And it does not do it all the time he says like 1 out of 10-15 hard accelerations.

Oh well I will pass on the great info and let him deal with it.
