To all of you guys that have autoxed your Lightning. Do you leave the tranny in "D" or do you just put it in second gear and leave it there when you race? Or is there some other way to work the gears I'm not thinking of?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
I leave it in "D".
If you drive around the course without really getting on the gas you'll hit 3rd, and if you really granny you'll see 4th. But if you go around the course You may hit 3rd but it will be mostly 1st and 2nd.

I usually put it in 2nd for Solo II and D for Solo I. OD always off.
What are you using for tires ? I used a set of BFG R1's (295/35/18) mounted on a second set of the 2001 wheels. Since they are a lot smaller, the engine feels a lot more lively, and the truck would run out of rpm's in first, even on tight Solo II courses.
BTW, these wheels with the tires are for sale...

if ya leave it in 2 then when u take off or if u slow down enough 1st gear will never get used, with the lever in 2 it will take off in 2 and always stay there, a handy tip for the slippery days, probally u will never slow down enough for the truck to want to shift into first but the holeshot will be slower...

I took the high performance course at Mid Ohio which included autoX. They said keep it in 1st to help with the braking coming up to a turn, so that's what I do. That's assuming that the course is so small that you don't go over about 45 mph top speed.
I have tried it in D and 2nd. Mine WILL smoke'm at the start in 2nd
Auto-X pro(Awhittle) took me for a "ride along" in mine, boy am I slow:o
Leave it in drive. Trust the ABS. Get yourself some BFG-R1's they stick.

If you are just learning autoX leave it in second as you will have your hands full with 500 ft-lbs of torque and 5000 lbs.
Once you get the hang of it.. I think I was running D with the od off. The thing that is a little touchy is the 20 mph 180's when you nail it, the truck goes all the way to 1st and wants to get a little squirly
. Are we talking stock class without chips and traction bars? If you want to set up a chip for autocross I could give some sugestions on how to set it up. I think Spike has messed with shocks and may be willing to share the setup.
For what it's worth...I borrowed the RoadRash truck for one run after I blew the pipe on the race car on my second run. I put about 8 sec on him and missed F stock ftd by a 1/2 sec to a Camario on Hoosiers. HEHE
PS I use the L to setup most courses that I design. To see my kids car http://www.ncs-stl.com/Images/Neon4.jpg
