and a cool sounding motor...I already got that after paying 1750.00 for exhaust
Sal, Do any of these cams have just as smooth idle as stock and respectable power gain???

Dale/Greg, I am not sure if the cams I will be offering are the same as what Greg is talking about, because I don't know who his engine builder is dealing with. I know of two companies coming out with new cams for mod motors other than the people I'm dealing with, so it could be any brand.
The cams I currently have in my truck, are a very mild regrind. They are so mild that they didn't really show squat on the dyno, it was like 5hp. The specs are 284 duration, and the lift on the exhaust side was left at stock .533, and the intake side was brought up to match the exhausts .533, and it's got a 116 overlap. My cams don't even require lash caps. Considering that our trucks use basically the same cam specs as a 4.6 GT, I was expecting more of gain, even from such a mild cam.
Chikin, even though my particular cams are mild, they still give the truck a bit of a twitchy idle, and require a chip adjustment. If I pull the chip out, the truck will not stay running. We've done a few sets of more radical cams for a few customers with about .575 lift, and they made some decent power, but they don't idle like stock for sure, and require lash caps.
Using lash caps, you can pretty much have any specs you want. But the difference between a new cam and a regrind with the same specs, is that the regrind will have an inferior lobe shape since you are starting with a lobe that's smaller than what you are trying to end up with, and you make up the difference with the lash caps. This is not to say that regrinds are bad, or will make less power, that is yet to be proven since no new cams exist yet. But on a supercharged vehicle, the shape of the cam lobe itself can be just as important as the lift and duration specs. We'll just have to wait for the new ones to come out, and do some testing.

Greg, I had been selling valve springs, but it turns out they have a defect in them. Some places are still selling them, but I chose to get all the sets I sold back from my customers, and will be exchanging them for new ones being made by a different manufacturer. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to get you "quickly". It is going to be a few weeks before the new springs are ready, but I refuse to take a chance of selling someone the current ones.

Are we going to have to worry about losing to much engine vacume with the longer duration cams? In the 70's we would get in situations where we couldn't operate some of the vacume assisted components.
PS to all - We don't need no stinkin' smooth idle! (Actually, I do want it to be streetable but nothing is cooler than the way a car sounds with a little lumpy idle provided you have a good sounding exhaust. The sounds of an L-88, a ford side-oiler and a 440 magnum with a solid cam come to mind.
I guess I'm showing my age at 40 something.

Those were/are 427's right?
Besides age it probably tells me a couple of things.
1. You don't like people bumming a place to crash so instead of a bedroom you have an engine room.
2. You are a fellow motorhead
3. you have probably used the phrase, "there is no substitute for cubic inches except more cubic inches."
4. Like alot of us you buy stuff because its rare and you don't have an immediate use for it.
5. You either need or have an empty 69 GT 500 SCJ chassis and body! (I'm not a cobra expert but I think that is the model a good friend of mine had with the 427.)
6. You need a sound recording and a stereo system in that room so you can pretend it is running.
Cool Stuff.

I believe that I will NOT have to use valve lash caps on those cams of mine. The duration on your cams are scary.
The duration on mine is 228 on both sides (changes at the last minute). Any more than that and I would just be wasting fuel. There is HARDLY any overlap and no one won't be able to notice that I will have aftermarket cams unless I tell them. And FYI, the lobe separation is 114. I am also getting the new Modmax intake and exhaust valves, Modmax Valve springs (better version), and a full porting job including a 3 angle. I don't have any flow numbers yet, but if you are interested then I will post them in I get it done. If you want to know who is doing my heads you can e-mail me. He is well known modular motor builder in South Texas.

Yeah, my dad use to have an L88. As a matter of fact it was a '68 Vette L88. It was way underated at 435hp. More like 550+hp. He said it was the baddest mo fo around. M22 tranny, 4.11's, off road exhaust, and 5mpg. He called it "The Red Mess". Said he had to put a quart of oil every time he filled up the car. Today that thing is worth over $200,000.
If only he would have kept it.

There are a couple of different ways to rate a cams duration, the SAE method usually taken at .006 tappet lift and the racer version wich is taken at .050 lift. I don't have any idea how the mod motors cam duration is taken, but it could be that Sal was quoteing the equivelent of and SAE number and you were quoteing a number farther up the curve. In other words its apples and oranges.
NeedForSpeed
You were right on except for #5......its a 69 fairlane cobra and I really wanted to put it together this year, but now I have to do the engine for the truck.

. All the motor parts are in there except for the head studs. They came in the following day, so you should see those tomorrow. Don't forget to send the springs back to me for exchange.
