Question chip only??

has anyone just went with a chip and oil breather only?=no pulley's no trans mods , no aftermarket air induction?
i am thinking of going that route instaed of all mods ..
Chip only with oil breather and a little mod to stock airbox = 2.5
inch ram air into bottom of box with K&n panel filter.
Has anyone wen't with just a chip? how did it do?all driving will be street miles.

also i have been reading something about ,an easy way to re- set your ECM back to stock code when going to dealer?is this true and has anyone actually reset ECM and had dealer scan with NO probs?

I ran my L thru the 1/4 3 passes with just a JL street chip and a K&N panel filter, got 2 passes @ 13.14 and 1 pass @ 13.12 thats about 5 tenths faster than I was stock.
I still do not have the oil breather on my truck so I can't help you there. I have a small fuel line check valve that goes on an airplane in the hose just above the PCV valve to keep the oil problem away and so far I have no oil.
About the codes, I don't think that has been a problem for dealers, its the simple fact that anyone can just look at the terminals on the computer and see that it has been chipped because you must remove the protection that was sprayed on the board from the factory in order to install the chip.

Your welcome, but I'm going to check back with you about 2 weeks after you get the chip to see if you are going to stop putting the mod's on. Its like potato chips you can't eat just one. hehehe

I went with a chip, breather, boost bypass, and transmission modifcation. I put a K&N filter in the stock airbox. I have an Autotap program on a laptop that clears all codes on my Ford diesel. I plan on buying the Autotap program for my Lightning. I saved the little tab for the plug for the PCM box, to put back in place when or if I have to take it in for warranty work. The biggest risk I see in doing that on the Lightning with the JDM chip, (Superchips), you have to modify the bracket that holds the PCM in place. "Someone" who knows what they are looking for can easily spot the modified bracket, which would tip them off that a chip had been installed in it. I would guess that with some chips, that bracket does not need to be modified. Then the "someone" would have to pull the PCM and inspect the contacts to determine whether a chip had been installed, (still an easy thing to do). It is a risk I am willing to take. My diesel has 92K miles, 70K with a Superchip 80HP chip. No problems.

As far as performance, I can not tell you yet. The track here does not open until April.

Smile You'll Be More Than Happy

LightningRod...I run the setup your talking about. Can't help you with track times as the truck has never been raced, or has it ever been in the shop. Seems to be some kind of correlation with mods and service techs, kind of like tornados and trailer parks or something. You can live with just a chip on the street, and be able to stay with or beat 98% of the cars out there from 0-70mph. You know stop light fun. Any more power than that just goes up in smoke if ya know what I mean. Also a 4" tube will fit up to your airbox with a little fenderwell modification. Good Luck

If you are not going to do the line mod valve and unplug the boost by-pass you might as well leave it stock. These two inexpensive mods will do more for you than you could ever imagine combined with the chip and airbox mod. Without these two, you'll miss the boat.

thanks again guys, by the way if i were going to do a trans mod
chickenears i would go with the psp valvemod you should read the techs articale on line mods = tranny damage, go to psp web sight read the truth about transmission mods.but thanks for the input, and i will do the boost bypass maybe, dont know if i relally need to?
Now if someone would post any alternative ways to re-set ECM on the L computer back to stock if someone needed to i would be well on my way to the chip purchase.

Mike:

I may loose a sale but as far as I know, there is no way to conceal 'chip useage' from a dealer. First, there is the physical evidence of the cleaned-off contacts and then there is code set in the computer. I'm unaware of any way to delete the code.........

Btw, my L has never(knock-on-wood) been to a dealer since I picked up her from Gene Evans Ford.

Dan

PS: If you call and I'm not in, leave your number and I will return your call.

Huh

The chip doesn't do much by itself? You're kidding, right?

I thought that chips went KABOOM!!!!! But seriously folks I am also contemplating a chip, airbox mod, K&N, boost by bass, and Valvue body. Looks like an inexpensive yet practical way to go.....For now. WAH HA HA HA (pulley, pulley, pulley...)

Wink

It's the pulleys that go KABOOM! Try a 6# just for fun, you can always get the rods later.

I ran just a chip and filter for 5 months till I got my pulley.

I ran 13.8 stock when I put the chip and filter I ran 13.2

A chip will really wake the truck up, in my case I also got better gas millage.

dan i really could call you sun on my dime if possilble?=12 hr.nights and the sandman thang
i thought u could unhook the battery terminal or something and re-set the factory ECM back to original configuration?:o so there is no way with just the chip to go back to stock setting s in the computer =warranty issues?
