antifreeze smell ??
hi, giys my 2001 L w/2,900 mi on it,=when i first start it up ,with the heater on no fan just in the on posistion , i get the faint smell of antifreeze? goes away shortly after starting up.checked both antifreeze resivors both at cold fill levels and haven't moved . whats up with the smell?
Check the right side of the engine, back coil pack and see if antifreeze or just a green color is on it. The hose just above it leaks on some trucks. Just tighten the clamp and it should stop. Mine leaked and ruined the coil pack.
He is talking about the spark plug coil pack for the passenger side rear most plug. Right above it is a couple of hoses that have clamps on them. Somtimes the factory has not got one of the hoses clamps on correctly and coolant will seep down and land on that coil pack. You get an antifreeze smell plus over time it trashes the coil pack.
i am still getting the smell every other (cold) startup? no leaking hoses ,no loss of antifreeze =both resivors? you can smell it only when you first start it cold, just for a second or 2 then the antifreeze smell is gone??this is with the heater in the floor position and no fan on when i start it up ? no fluid on garage floor , no leaking fluid from heatercore, no leaking hose's ,where could the smell come from for just those few seconds on a cold start up,doesn't do it when warm?
it goes away quick when it does it? any more ideas?

I noticed the same thing as well, and like you my levels have not moved.
I'm theorizing that it's not coolant that's causing the smell- it's the ethanol in the higher octane and/ or winter formulated gas. I had the truck running in the garage (door open
), and that's when I really noticed it.
This is by no means scientific, but notice those reporting this (so far) are from up north?
Just a thought.
Hey Jackman, I see you're from Rochester. My parents live there too. I'm over all the time in the summer with the L.
