Speedometer Calibrator
Speedometer Calibrator
I know Dallas Mustangs sell a device called SpeedCalc for the late model mustangs to recalibrate your speedometer after gear and or tire changes. Does anyone know of something like this for the Lightning? Thanks for your help.
nostreetracing,
Sure, any of the VSS speed recalibrators will work in a Lightning or an F150 for that matter. However, if your vehicle is a 2001 or a 2002, the recalibrator will work, but at cruise, the torque converter will not lock up resulting in higher tranny temps and lowered gas milage. I know this because I did a gear swap in my 2001 4x4 F150. Turns out the hardest part of the whole swap was the speedometer recalibration. I did get one of the recalibrators, works great around town, but I have had to learn how to drive at cruise to keep the TQ engaged.

Well, I was wanting to do it without going to a chip at this time. I only have 520 miles on my L and was going to wait a little longer for a chip. Guess I could just wait on all changes and get a chip burn at the same time. Thanks to all for the help.
I know Sal can accomindate for gear and tire changes. But im not sure if JL or Jim can. Contact your tuner and find out.

Thats interesting.
I was specifically told that on the 2001 Ford computers they were not yet reprogrammable via a chip for tire or gear swaps. Something to do with a single bank set-up on the 2000's and earlier versus a dual bank set-up for the 2001's - all in preparation for a general industry standardization for computer controls that will roll in in the next couple of years, as I understand.
Now, this was for a supercrew, and its computer architecture may be different from the L's. Apparently that is the case. Either that or the aftermarket has caught up.

I remember more to this now. I was told, on the 2001's, that if you switch gears or tires to an existing size offered by Ford, say a gear swap from 3.55 to 3.73, that it was possible to reprogram via a star tester, or chip. But, if you went from 3.55 to 4.10 like I did, you are SOL, since Ford doesn't offer 4.10 as one of their gear choices.
