I know the later models have had some additions, and come with more power ... are they actually turning better times at the track? Is there a specific year I should stay away from? Do any of the years react better to mods? I know basically 99-00 are lumped together and 01-02's are lumped together for the most part. Thanks for you patience with my newbie questions, I just wanna make sure I get the best L I can!

The 99-00, if i remember right, runs like 14.6 or so i the 1/4 mile.
01-02 runs 13.9

changes for 01 are 20 more HP, up to 380 HP, and 3.73 gears

 

"03" is the best. You all lose.

 

 

Were did this 14.6 run take place..on mt everest with a granny driving? My 00 ran 13.8-9 tottally stock in 85 degree weather and i saw an 00 run 13.60 this past summer tottally stock. As far as the motors go, the 99-00 seem to be stonger than at least the 01's when modded.

 

My 99 ran in the 13.50's 13'60's stock. I have never seen an L run a 14.6.

 

Personally I favor the '99's and 00's (updated with the '01 goodies like the intercooler, shocks, and driveshaft).

I feel they look better, and honestly I have yet to be beat by anything newer than a 2000.

In my completely unbiased opinion the 2000 L's are the best Seriously they are all good. My personal observation is that the 99/00 L's are easily capable of running a 13.9 dead stock in sub optimal conditions. The later model years seem to be a little faster but they also seem to be blowing engines at a higher percentage then the previous years. That might be more related to people pushing the envelope further as time goes on. I like the drivetrain on the 01/02's and the Bilsteins but the lights and the wheels never caught on with me. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. Buy the one you think looks best and mod it to get the performance you want.

 

As far as I'm concered the 99 to 02's all can look the same, drive the same with mods but there's only 4000 99 L's ever made and thats the reason I kept mine over the 00/01/02's. I bought this truck for its exclusivity and thats what I got.

#917 of 4000, its got a nice ring to it.

If you ask me, the 99's are the best. they where the first to do it all and the king of Gen2 L's.

 

The '01 & '02 are faster. With 20 HP and 10 more TQ (claimed), 3.73 gears instead of 3.55, aluminum drive shaft, and a more efficient intercooler, it only makes sense. If you've seen the document of the 1/4 mile times (posted here many times), you'll notice the '01s-'02s and their mods, they're running quicker (for the most part) than the '99-'00 with equal mods. Plus all of the basic car magazines reported faster times on every '01 tested. (Motor Trend, C&D)
But, this isn't a huge difference, we're talking a couple tenths of a second. This is also one reason so many '99-'00 are upgradig to the '01-'02 parts. They're all great and look enough different that you can base it on your taste of how they look. I prefer owning vehicles under warranty. Even if you put on mods, it won't negate the warranty not related to the drivetrain.

 

My 99 made it thru the 3/36 warrenty without a single dealer visit, so i got that going for me.

 

Modded the 01's are not faster than the 99-00 and the alumimnum driveshaft is a p.o.s. for running high 11's-low 12's as they have been known to break. The 01's computers are tweaked,therefore they don't respond as well to chipping as a 99-00. My 00 ran 12.79 108.97 with a chip and filter+ et streets,no pulleys. How many 01's run this time with these mods?answer,none that i no of. I do think that the 01's seem to respond to pulleys better than the 99-00's.

 

Also, the 99/00's get updated with the upper intake and intercooler from the 01/02 models. Now, if we could just fit that lower intake
