Octane Boost = blech
Octane Boost = blech
This is kinda old news for me, but I never posted on the topic.
first off, I'm stock for now.
A few weeks ago I ran 104+ octane boost (you know the one that says "104+ Octane boost" in the red bottle.) Of course I filled up and was expecting at least somewhat beter throttle response, however while cruising on the freeway, under light to moderate acceleration I would hear almost a faint metal to metal grinding type noise, very hard to explain. I was worried and talked to a buddy of mine and he explained to me that in my situation I shouldn't use octane boost, at least under my stock conditions, since the boost would cause miscalculation with the computer and since I don't have advanced timing or any timing adjustment. It made sense to me, but I was just curious if any one else has experienced this for themselves, or if any one agrees or disagrees?

OK Guys, this just doesn't make much sense to me. So if I were to run this 104+ octane boost in my truck, the computer would advance my timing even on light to moderate acceleration??? Why would it do this?? It seems to make more sense with WOT. And what could be that 'grinding noise' that Strikes Twice is hearing?

If the fuel you are using is 93 oct and you still get 'noise' then an oct. booster may help but most guys here find no 'help' with 104 and similar boosters. Torco Acellerator is a race gas 'concentrate' and does work.
Zylene or toluene will raise oct. levels considerably--ask CornerCarver or cablebandit.

If you want higher octane, fill up with some unleaded 100 octane from 76 (there are stations that carry it in your part of CA) along with your normal 91 octane. It works great if you get a bad tank of 91 or your chip is running lean.
Downside: $4.50/gallon

StrikesTwice,
Go to www.76.com and find the station locator.
Type in your address/zip and check the box marked "Racing Fuel", then a distance radius.
I tried San Mateo but didn't get any hits. You might want to try other cities in the bay area.
