Whoever posted the 13.3 1/4 mile time for the M3, is right.........that is what they are pulling! Look at Motor Trend, of any of the other ones! Maybe not the convertibles, but the 6-speed coupe will easily pull a mid-13 second pass all day long, STOCK!! They have packages that you can get 'em up to mid 400HP at the crank! Of course those are the people with George Washington's as toilet paper

This guy I know, traded in his 3-month old S2K, for a brandspanking new convertible M3.............another friend of mine rode with him, says it pulls real real hard, even though he was shifting early so as to make sure he didn't over-rev it. Unless i get a chip and filter, i won't be racing him anytime soon!!!

F1 was in transition in the early ’80s, as turbocharged 1.5-liter engines (the maximum "blown" capacity permitted) were displacing the three-liter normally aspirated racing engines that had dominated the sport for years. BMW Motorsport engineering chief Paul Rosche was tasked with uprating BMW’s production-based 1500 four-cylinder Formula 2 engine into an F1 giant-killer. He machined the sturdy iron blocks for lightness, and lowered the compression ratio from the F2 engine’s 11.2:1 to less than 7.0:1. Special valves and pistons were also crafted.

By 1983, the BMW’s power output was at 640hp—in race trim. Special high-output engines for qualifying (meaning, they had only to last for a few laps) generated at least 1,200hp! Even BMW doesn’t know for sure how powerful these engines were, since its factory dynos of the time couldn’t record more than 1,200hp)

To those who tried to pick on me and hurt my whittle feelings phorget you!!! M3s are cool, but I probably wouldn't buy one. I could see my wife driving one, but she wants a Saleen Speedster. Nuts!

Everyone I know with BMW's, including about 8 M3's say they would never buy an American car again....I am all for supporting our economy, and no doubt the cars of the late 60's early 70's were the sweetest, but Germany knows how to make an automobile! Not to mention the paint jobs...go to any car detailer and ask them what they would rather detail....a 15 year old Mercedes or BMW or a 3 year old American car. Sad, but true

Just my .02.

or something.

More BMW F1 Trivia

BlackLight,

Thanks for the info on BMW F1 engines. Here's a bit more.

Those early turbocharged F1 motors actually used stock blocks. That in itself is not that remarkable. The interesting part was that BMW engineers found that used engines made for a stouter F1 motor. If memory serves me it was something to do with how the block seasoned over time. After exhausting the supply of used in house 3 series blocks, BMW was buying used 312i's (European model only) and cannabilizing them for their blocks to make F1 engines.

The Z3's and a few 3-series models are assembled in South Carolina.
