At first, I was on the side of everyone saying, "what the Hell, get out there and ust do it. But there was this earlier note from someone doing it himself and he stripped out a pan bolt because he had to do it twice.

Now I am thinking, pay some tranny shop the $150 or so, and hope they don't screw it up for you. I guess that is six of one and a half dozen of the other. Not much help, but if you take your time and follow the instructions nice and easy, you will be happier in the long run knowing what was done to your vehicle.

Good Luck

Do it yourself. It's not hard at all! If you have a new pan do as the Captain said and punch a hole in one corner...that makes it a snap and not to messy. I did not even use a torque wrench. No problems at all. It is one of the best mods I have on my L.

I'm going to be swaping mine in the next few weeks, where do I get the 4x4 pan and the filter? Also, any recommendations on the type of transmission fluid? I am way over here in Germany, so I will probably have to order everything. We have a Ford dealership, but since they don't sell trucks over hear, they would have to order everything too. Appreciate your help, Jeff

Odins Wrath- I just did mine two days ago!! Let me give you one really big pointer! DO NOT remove the little valve body towards rear of trans.!!!!!!!!!!! My dumb a$$ did this and four little ***** went rolling on the ground!! I knew I was ********* then! Ended up having to go to the dealership and get drawings and help from the tranny tech there on where those little bastards went!! A really big PITA!!!! I still cant believe I did that!
The one you remove is towards the front of the tranny, you have to remove the filter to access it. It runs width wise of the truck(say from door to door)
It really is an easy job, the valve pops out and the new one slides right in. It took me exactly 7 quarts to refill tranny. After you get the valve installed and the pan bolted back in, put 4 quarts in, start the truck up and let it idle for a few minutes add another quart and start checking the level then and add as needed. Hope this helps ya out.

Part of the point of this kit was to make it easy to install. Odin, drop me an e-mail, I might be able to help you with the install a little.

Thanks for the help guys. And for the kick in the pants! 5 hours of labor and I'm done. I also installed the Densos and the 160* stat. No more plugs for me thank you.

Now I don't have any parts laying around that need to be installed. I'm starting to feel the bug again. Now I know why I was really putting it off. I am diseased. Anybody know a good shrink?

deep trans pan

What will changing to the deep pan do other than give you a drain plug. Is there a need for it? I have no trouble taking the original pan off so does the little bit xtra fluid matter that much?

'Supposed to keep the transmission cooler. I don't think anyone has dyno tested it; but, there may also be some hp freed up by lowering operating temps. I can't imagine it's much though. I think......

Why just change pans for the extra fluid and convenience of a drain plug, when you could install an aftermarket aluminum finned pan, with extra capacity, drain plug and extra cooling capacity.

If you just want/need a drain plug, B&M has a drain plug kit.

Big difference in price, Aluminum pans, $75 and up
4x4 pan $40-80 range
B&M drain plug less than $20

Just my .02
