I'm no expert, but here goes, when fuel sits, it tends to degrade any blend of compounds in it. I don't know about the Northeast, but California (go figure) adds all kinds of winter chemicals to reduce pollution (yeah right). When it sits it draws in the moisture and the moisture condenses on the bottom of the tank.
Sorry so long.
What I would do is, drain what you can, use it in the mower, chainsaw, whatever. Get a bottle of Redline or Heet fuel system water remover and as you fill up, use that bottle to get any stored moisture out.
Remember, it is an alcohol base and does not add octane. Drive conservatively on the first tank, then change the fuel filter for the next tank.
But, that's just my .02.

Look for a product called Stabil. It will keep the gas... well... stabil (le)... We use it here on our farm in generators, tractors, etc. and have never had any probs with it.

Yes the octane rating of fuel drops huge. Somthine like 2 pts a week if unsealed. Use Stable and stay out of the gas pedel untill you can get down till the fuel light comes on and then fill with new fuel. I often syphen the old fuel and put it into the wifes mini van 5 gal at a time. Take it from a guy with one boat, two normal jet skies, one race jet ski and a race car. THE FUEL GOES BAD

It'll probably still run. Our boat sits for about 7 mos out here in ca, and fires right up on the old gas. I do, however fill the tanks before running it hard.

The proper wording is your fuel is stale (sounds like a bag of potato chips).
